Voice to text software package

a reliable one somebody already uses,

only GUI please!

What about the web version?
I use Voice Notepad - Speech to Text with Google Speech Recognition

FYI, I make one of these, so take that into account. It’s called TalkType. It’s a regular app with a tray icon, no terminal needed. You hold a key, talk, let go, and the text goes wherever your cursor is. Everything runs offline on your own machine.

There’s an .rpm on the releases page: Releases · ronb1964/TalkType · GitHub

I use it every day on Nobara, which is Fedora based, so that’s the setup it gets tested on the most. The first run walks you through picking a speech model and checking your hotkey. If you try it and something doesn’t work right, say so and I’ll look into it.

I tested
TalkType-v0.14.1-x86_64.AppImage

Instead of Ukrainian text, there are just numbers.
How do I delete everything it downloaded?
And stop and forget about the services it launches at system startup

Sorry about that, and thanks for the screenshot, it showed me exactly what went wrong. You’re on X11 with two keyboard layouts, and TalkType read the first one in the list, English, instead of the one you actually had on, which was Ukrainian. So it typed English key positions. The letters it had no keys for came out as 9s, and your comma and period keys turned into б and ю. That’s a bug on my end and I’m fixing it.

To take it all off, quit TalkType from its tray icon first, then run these:

systemctl --user disable --now ydotoold.service
rm -f ~/.config/systemd/user/ydotoold.service ~/.config/autostart/talktype.desktop
rm -rf ~/.config/talktype ~/.local/share/TalkType
rm -rf ~/.cache/huggingface/hub/models--Systran--faster-whisper-* ~/.cache/huggingface/hub/models--istupakov--parakeet* ~/.cache/huggingface/hub/models--ggml-org--parakeet*

The ydotoold service is the thing that starts with your system. Setup also asked for your password once to let it use the keyboard, and these two undo that:

sudo rm -f /etc/udev/rules.d/99-talktype-uinput.rules
sudo gpasswd -d $USER input

Skip the second one if you were already in the input group before TalkType. After that just delete the AppImage.

If you ever feel like trying it again once the fix is out, I’d really like to know whether Ukrainian comes through right. No pressure though.

Heads up, the fix is out in 0.14.1: Release TalkType 0.14.1: keyboard layouts, X11, and no more stray ~ in terminals · ronb1964/TalkType · GitHub

I tried it on an X11 setup with English and Ukrainian, switched to Ukrainian, and it typed “Привіт, світе.” like it should. Words the Ukrainian layout has no keys for, like “Windows”, get pasted instead. There’s an AppImage and an .rpm on that page. If you give it another go I’d like to hear how it does on your machine, but no pressure.
