Vivaldi key expires

Was just trying to run an update… I get a bit confused when I see things like this. I get. A key has expired so it needs to be removed. But I didn’t do it right away because now I am wondering if Vivaldi will still work like it should if I remove the key. Was going to ask my son when he gets up…

The following OpenPGP key (0x74C35BC8) is about to be removed:
 Reason : Expired on 2026-02-11 11:44:18
 UserID : "Vivaldi Package Composer KEY10 <packager@vivaldi.com>"
 Fingerprint: C2A2445B0EC3B396BD526E31F739AAC074C35BC8

As a result, installing packages signed with this key will fail.
It is recommended to remove the expired key to allow importing
an updated key. This might leave already installed packages unverifiable.

The system will now proceed with removing the key.

I just hit “N” when it asked if it was OK to remove the key. Frankly I don’t get why I need a key to use a browser anyway. The updates can wait until I figure out what to do. I guess my thought is why is it not just replacing an old key with a new one?

You don’t need a key to use a browser, but the person packaging the browser has a key to prove that they packaged the code, and they are hopefully trusted.

Keys are regularly rotated to tidy up movers and leavers, and as they expire - they don’t last forever. In this case, this key is now expired and should not be trusted.

Thank you. I will go ahead and remove it then. Will report back if there is anything that happens that affects the use of the browser. I guess I need to log off now and go do that.

It doesn’t affect browsing but you won’t be able to install an updated version of the browser until you import their new signing key…

Thank you. That is what I figured. I am a bit of a hack sometimes but I’m sure that my son will know how to do that. Or I guess that I can Google it. All is well…
