The very first screen of the new installer shows language selection and keyboard layout. But there are no options for keyboard layout.
Instead, you click on the current one to change it, but to my surprise this simply opens Gnome Settings. Now suddenly you have a lot of “noise” on your screen.
While in the middle the option to add a keyboard layout is available, it’s not very clear.
Worse. When you click to add a layout, it only shows about 8 options! It’s unclear that more options are available via the 3 vertical (!) dots that are awkwardly positioned at the bottom. Nothing about these dots seem to adhere to common/recognisable UI design.
And that’s not all, because after that, you are presented with languages but you don’t see the actual available layouts until you select a language. I even thought the layouts were simply missing!
It would make way more sense to have keyboard layout selection to be presented inside the installer, just like language. And with 2 lists, the keyboard language and next to it the available layouts.
I wonder if this should be filed under Project Discussion rather than Ask Fedora (user support) since it is more of a feature request or design decision?
Installer has its own language and keyboard configuration screen, but we do not show it in the Live GNOME environment because that was the agreement with the WG, and (afaik) because GNOME language settings need some special workarounds.
The question here can be split in two:
usability of the GNOME Settings
use of GNOME settings in the installer
but both are essentially driven by the decisions of the working group.
Red Hat assigned me to fix this. We have some discussion and background in this ticket and also this ticket.
The biggest problem currently is that input methods will be completely discarded, because anaconda has no way to configure them on the installed system. We might need to make changes in systemd-localed.
The QR code (asking the user for feedback about the installer) that is shown after installation brought me here.. I also thought that was a bit strange! To ask for feedback but drop me in Ask Fedora
