I am willing to upgrade my Fedora 42 Workstation to Fedora 44 Workstaiton.
This F42 (installed on 09/Apr/2025, before that just distro hopping) is my current work-oriented system, completely taking care of my tiny business, from A to Z (simply put). File storage itself is almost around 28 GB. I would like to have some great advise.
When I upgrade from F42 to F44, do I face consequences of losing 1) user settings, 2) personalized or customized settings, 3) files stored, etc, etc?
Anybody interested in guiding me with a clear set of instructions, warnings, guidelines, etc, are appreciated from my deep heart.
Under normal circumstances no, everything will be kept. But file operations can go wrong , so you should always have a solid backup.
Consider upgrading to f43 and wait a few months before upgrading to f44, as f44 is brand new and still has a few bugs or hiccups here and there.
I recommend upgrading using the following guide:
I agree with Flo.
I follow Fedora’s 6 month release cycle (because I like shiny new software
), but lately I delay the update for roughly one month after the release. During that time, I observe what issues people have before upgrading my machines.
In addition, and Flo also mentioned this as well, if your business relies on a machine, you really need to have a backup plan in place (pun intended). No matter how reliable Fedora’s updates are, storage can die, filesystems can get corrupted, etc.
