I am running Fedora 6.3.8-200.fc38.x86_64. Lots of memory and disk space.
I update the machine every day. After the latest update I find that:
On boot produces a locked screen, nothing I can do, keyboard and mouse inactive
I can get back into the machine via rescue but it locks up again after a variable time and mouse/keyboard become inactive again.
In this inactive state I can ssh into the machine and do everything in terminal mode with no lockdown for more than an hour…
I repeated the update on a backup disk (boots up and runs OK before update).
After backup I’m back in the same lockdown situation, no mouse/keyboard.
I tried booting from the previous 2 states (both 6.3.8-200) - same lockdown.
My Fedora 39 disk works OK in this machine, but I’m not doing an update on that till this is resolved.
You should be able to get some information about the failure using journalctl in your ssh terminal session.
I downloaded the latest Fedora 38 iso, dd it to a USB, install fedora on a new empty disk, no problems so far, I have what looks like a good system, mouse and keyboard OK and good display.
Before doing anything I go to Software and go ahead with recommended updates.
The updates appear to go through with no problems.
But when I boot up again I’m back to the lost or hanging mouse cursor and inactive keyboard.
Booting from the rescue system gives same problem.
ssh and fsck or e2fsck says the boot parition is clean, but can’t find a superblock on the BTRFS partition.
I can install Centos on same disk & machine - no problems.
What is going on with the latest sofware update? I’ve been doing these for years. My upgrade 37 to 38 was smooth, update up to 6.3.8 were smooth, but the last update (to 7.3.11 ???) caused all the problems.
HELP NEEDED URGENTLY
ron
We can’t help without more details. If your problem was urgent you could have better spent time providing details of your hardware and relevant journalctl
errors. Trying other distros only helps rule out some potential hardware failures. Many problems with a new kernel stem from firmware designed for older kernels and will disappear with an update.
You should be able to use 6.3.8 for urgent requirements, and then return to 6.2.11 when you have time. If you still have the problem, make sure you have all vendor firmware and Fedora updates, then proceed to How to file a bug.
Thanks George for looking at this. Attached are inxi -Fzx on the hardware - an HP100 - and a copy of the journalctl output. One point: when I boot up I get the usual display and a mouse cursor. The mouse can move this cursor around (for at least anhour I’ve checked) but as soon as I click the mouse to focus on the desktop, icons in the dock, or any application it freezes completely. Moving the mouse into the top left corner also freezes it. The journalctl is from a new installation of Fedora 38 on a new disk, no other action than clicking the mouse. This is from fedora 38 6.3.8-200 on a Pi4B. Slow but it works. Is there any way I can turn off any automatic attempts to update any of the fedora systems, I’ve lost 2 disks from un-initited updates that happen at boot time. Actually there is no dat loss, it’s all accessible - see next point - just can’t boot from the disks into usable systems. Other point that might be relevant: if I attach a problem disk to Fed 38 on Pi4, I can read all partitions without any problems - looks like the file store is OK. BUT: On the journalctl I found: “”" fedora kernel: ACPI: video: [Firmwarwe Bug]: ACPI(IGFX) defines _DOD but not _DOS “”" “”" fedora kernel: ACPI: video: Video Decice [IGFX] (multi-heasd: yes rom: no post: no) “”" ‘’‘’’ fedora mount [398][: mount: /sysroot: can’t read superblock on /dev/sdb3 “”" “”" fedora kernel: BTRFS error (device sb3): bad tree block start, mirror 1 wants 115297500336 have 0 “”" Ron ---- Ron Catterall

Is there any way I can send you the journalctl output as a text file. Your mail only accepts jpg etc
Shouldn’t sb3
be sdb3
? Text formatting is a mess and I don’t see inxi
output. I’m not sure what you mean by:
With Fedora Workstation and using Gnome Software, the system reboots to install updates and then reboots to the new configuration. If the system is crashing while there is disk I/O in progress the file system can be corrupted, but the disk itself should still be fine.
The inxi is added to topic, I saw it there. I set up the outputs as text files only to find you only accept jpg etc. the journalctl is long. Can I email it?
Sb3 is my typo error - sdb of course.
Un-initiated updates. When I power on to boot, it has several times (not always) gone immediately into a software update that I have not requested (initiated). The updates cause the problems.
Post properly edited and formatted text in the forum to get more eyes on the problem. It can be very useful if others with the same problem can find your posts and compare hardware.
journalctl
output is very verbose, so much of it will not be relevant. Start with journalctl -p 3
if you don’t find relevant messages.
This isn’t normal. Maybe the system is crashing while attempting updates. You could try journalctl -b N -p 3
with N chosen to give you one of the problematic updates.
One should not attach those outputs, but rather include them as preformatted text </>
in the post.

Sorry, I meant to indicate using the </>
button on the toolbar, not to use the literal symbols. I was not clear enough in the directions.
Simply highlight the text to be formatted after pasting it, then click on that button and it should enclose the text in triple backquotes [```] on the line before and after the text. That makes it a preformatted text block.
