Unstable Graphics on Fedora 33 with Kernels 5.10.9 and 5.10.10

I’ve been having some odd things happen since upgrading to Kernels 5.10.9. and 5.10.10. Note that I am using a HPProDesk 600 G1 SFF with an i3-4160 CPU, 8GB RAM and integrated graphics. Desktop is Plasma.

On 5.10.9, I found that my lower panel would flicker sometimes as I moved my mouse various places. Later on, my screen completely blacked out, so I went back to using 5.10.8.

I upgraded to 5.10.10 when it became available. I still use it, but I have found (occasional) poor rendering of the numbers on my calendar/clock in the system tray, streaking on icons for my adblocker and “Heartbleed” display on my Google Chrome browser, streaking of widgets on my desktop and blackout of the screen background that goes away as I move my mouse over my widgets, and comes back when I move it away from the widgets (maybe vice-versa. I get a bit excited when it happens and don’t remember exactly how it happens).

Here are a couple of screen shots of phenomena I could reproduce for this post.

Any way, have you all any suggestions for reporting this? It’s not a hard failure.301aac534090a801b19096a1e918126039d116d8.png

I am seeing the same thing on those kernel versions. I thought it was tied to a mesa-dri-drivers upgrade but becoming convinced that isn’t the problem. I opened 1922511 – upgrading mesa-dri-drivers to 20.3.3-3 causes smearing/tearing which you might want add your experience to help illustrate the problem and get more attention to this issue.

Thanks, Bruce, Will do shortly – my composition skills are a tad slow. You might also want to check out a possibly related thread in this forum: Use of wacom pen freezes system under newest kernel. Best regards.

That particular device lists 3 different Radeon GPUs and 3 different Nvidia GPUs as options. Which GPU is installed and what drivers are you using? Please post the output of “inxi -Gxx”

Here is the hardware info from lshw:

EDIT
What you posted shows an intel gpu and I note that the GPU and CPU are both different than the specs on line for that machine. Online it calls for an i5 processor and either Radeon or Nvidia graphics. Please modify the command above to

lspci -nnv

and

inxi -xx

and post them separately so we can see all the hardware.

Here’s the first. My apologies that I don’t understand exactly what is meant by or how to enclose the terminal output in code tags:

BTW, you will notice I am now using Kernel 5.10.11 and am having the same issues.

As you can see @hhlp was so kind and made it for you.

If you cut and past text from the Terminal here, it looks odd. Generally the terminal uses fixed font that the output is more readable.

To make the same here in the editor, use
paste your output here
Or you can make four (uuups two are enoug) backticks ` before and after your paste.

I have been trying different ways to zero in on the root cause over the last 3 days. I upgraded my system to kernel 5.10.11 from koji. Still had issues at times; it seemed to occur when the system load was above 2.5. Easiest way to trigger hi system load; when clamscan was running. It seems to be the most consistent trigger for the graphics blurring.

Thanks. I’ll try to follow that instruction next time.

I’m at a loss. I’ve seen similar to our experiences in other posts, so I think people are working on it. Thanks for your help in this. If I find out anything, I’ll let you know.

Hopping the bandwagon to say that it’s happening to me as well in a similar computer, had to fallback to a previous kernel version (5.10.8) as a temporary solution. Also left a comment to the bugzilla thread Bruce created. Here are my specs:

Systems specs are:

Intel i5-4570T (4) @ 3.600GHz

I didn’t check if the problem was specifically the mesa-dri-drivers, just fell back to a previous kernel and assumed the problem was the kernel. But I do have a similar version of the mesa-dri-drivers package mentioned above (mesa-dri-drivers-20.3.4, didn’t try downgrading)

Sorry My english
I have the same on fedora 33 kde, gnome, xfce, cinnamon and now fedora 33 mate-compiz

thanks for your help.

I’m kind of sitting tight for the moment, but based on my experience since upgrading to Kernel 5.10.13, all seems well. I’ll post again in a couple of days. Thanks everyone for your involvement in this and help.

Thanks.

Hi all, I have been on kernel 5.10.13 for a while as well. last night under a heavy load > 3, the display “froze”. Using ALT TAB, I eventually found a window that still responded but then the screen “froze” again. Did a ALT F3 and was able to log into a shell session. Looked around in /sys/kernel/debug/dri/0/i915_* but couldn’t find any meaningful errors. i915_error_status didn’t yield anything for example.

Keeps happening with 5.10.14

Bruce and Samuel, this does not surprise me. After my last message regarding Kernel 5.10.13 I found while using the Google Chrome browser on an image search that grey or unsaturated colored blocks would appear in the display, and would disappear and appear with movement of the mouse cursor. I haven’t been able to use 5.10.14 yet but we’ll see what happens over the weekend.

Hi, kernel 5.10.14 didn’t fix it for me either. Most of the issues now are on the toolbar but occasionally on the desktop.

I use kde plasma most of the time but gnome seems to act up as well. Plasma Wayland made it worse. I switched from KDM to SDDM. Same problems i think but would be curious what everyone else is using (KDM/GNOME, KDM/SDDM) to help eliminate variables.
