I tried to uninstall vivaldi but gnome-software reports:
Failed to find vivaldi-stable;7.5.3735.66-1;x86_64;installed:@commandline
Does @commandline mean it was installed with dnf and gnome-software cannot uninstall it?

Apparently it did. I could uninstall it with sudo dnf remove vivaldi* but gnome-software still reports:
is gnome-software indeed that buggy?
No doubt Software has grevious short comings…
However, I just tested in a fresh F42 VM but I have no issues uninstalling vivaldi using Software after installing the latest Vivaldi rpm via dnf or Software
dnf wont remove any flatpak apps gnome-software installs.
OP showed Vivaldi was installed via dnf with the rpm directly with the original error message
What repo provides Vivaldi? I only see flathub
VIvaldi distributes the rpm directly which also configures their yum repo which remains after uninstallation of the pkg
packagekit doesn’t keep track of dnf transactions, try
sudo pkcon refresh force -c -1
I’ve found this: Gnome-software does not unistall apps
And what I suspected : “Gnome-Software and dnf don’t play well together” seems to hold true. Is possible to operate F4x without gnome-software or is it needed for some reason?
I have better experiences with GNOME Software, but it sometimes might have hard times dealing with multiple installation methods, in this case local RPMs.
If you don’t want to use GNOME Software, there is no need to uninstall it, you can just disable Automatic Updates and Automatic Update Notifications in Preferences.
This is very true.
Packagekit (gnome software) 1) has its own cache and metadata store (which has always been separate from the dnf cache structure), and 2) uses dnf4 behind the scenes.
With f41 & f42 dnf was upgraded to use dnf5 so those tools are even further mismatched.
It seems most practical to use only one or the other (gnome software or dnf) to avoid the discrepancies between the package managers.
Gnome software is not actually needed since everything it does (and more) is handled from the cli with dnf (except for the flatpaks themselves which require the flatpak command)
Is there work on a gui for DNF5? that would probably make things easier for people like me.
I assume that at some point gnome software will switch to using dnf5. It still works with dnf4 but users should really focus on using one method or the other (cli or gui) and not expect the exact same results with both. There are differences as you know.
