Unable to launch some Steam games on Fedora 43

Hi!

I just installed a Fedora 43 this week and I have had trouble getting Dota 2, CSGO 2 to launch. They are both Soruce 2 games so I imagine it’s the same cause. The error:
FATAL ERROR: AppSystemDict: Error in Init() of interface 'RenderDeviceMgr001'!

My Linux Mint installation runs both these games without issues.

Mint 22.2 installation:

  • Linux Kernel: 6.14.0-35-generic
  • DE: Cinnamon 6.4.8
  • X11 v 11.0 / Vendor version 1.21.1.11
  • Nvidia driver: 580.95.05

My “vanilla” Fedora 43 (I have only run sudo dnf install akmod-nvidia after the installation):

  • Linux Kernel: 6.17.7-300.fc34.x86_64
  • DE: Gnome: 49 (Wayland only)
  • Nvidia: 580.95.05

My GPU is a Nvidia RTX 4070.

I have searched for this issue but can’t find anything that seems relevant to my setup or Fedora 43 (I know it’s recent). This is my first time on Fedora and I really like it so far - apart from this issue. Hence, I’m currently booting into Linux Mint when it’s time to game. But I would like to be able to just run Fedora as I like it much more than Mint so far.

Is this probably a distro setup issue or an issue with the games? I do suspect Wayland to be the culprit, or rather the games being incompatible with Wayland. However, I can find lots if threads online that discuss how to improve Dota 2/CSGO2 performance on Wayland, indicating that they should be able to at least start and run on Wayland in general.

How didyou install Steam? Via RPMFusionand RPM? This is the way I would recommend.

You could try using Lutris, it integrates with Steam accounts, and it’s very easy to choose other Proton versions with it.

Yes I installed it through RPMFusion and RPM.

I might check out Lutris but I’d preferably like to solve this with just Steam.

For info, I’ve just downloaded and installed DOTA2 from RPM Steam. Plays without any issues on my machine, (KDE, F43, Kernel 6.17.7-300.fc43.x86_64, RTX2080 using 580.95.05). Obviously I’m using Wayland too, so that only really leaves Gnome as the difference between my kit and yours.

I didn’t change the compatibility so it defaulted to Proton Hotfix. For info, here’s the journal output from starting it to the main menu and quitting back to desktop.

I launched Dota 2 while having journalctl -f up and got the following:
I cannot deduct anything obvious from this. However, I had some back and fourth with ChatGPT which points out that is seems that the Mesa (AMD) drivers seems to be mentioned, when the Nvidia should be the ones used.

During the Fedora 43 Installation, the installer crashed every time I reached the Time-Zone select, and after some searching I found a thread here where the suggested change was to disable the dedicated gpu in UEFI, and then complete the installation with the built in graphics, and then re-enable it. Could this have prompted installation of the Mesa drivers (I’ve got an AMD CPU with built in graphics) such that I have both drivers running somehow - confusing Steam?

You’re attempting to run this on the Nvidia GPU you, have, so I’m somewhat surprised to see the following line in the stack trace. Maybe it’s just a naming thing and the same shared object file is used for both the Nv and AMD chipset regardless, but seeing references to Radeon when attempting to use the Nvidia kit is surprising.

Perhaps try some of the solutions presented here for forcing your kit to use the Nvidia hardware you want.

Maybe the OP should try using ‘switcherooctl’ to ensure the nvidia dGPU is actually used before launching steam.

No idea what that is, but if it does what it claims to, it wouldn’t hurt.

After a quick test I can confirm that CSGO 2 and Dota 2 (and Lockdown Protocol, which I didn’t mention since I wanted to keep the scope down on the thread) works if Steam is started through the terminal. I will read up on the linked thread later tonight or tomorrow when I have more time! I just skimmed through some posts on my way home.

After reading the other thread thoroughly I think I understand the issue on a high level. So this is a Fedora/Gnome bug rather than a bug with Steam? I mean, should I open an issue on Steams GitHub or should it be kept here?

It’s a bug with Gnome and how it starts steam.

  • Running steam on Gnome from the terminal is OK, so it’s not a Steam bug.
  • Running Steam from the Gnome launcher (or whatever Gnome calls it) has issues.

As such, I’d be inclined to raise a defect with Gnome and possibly the implementation of Gnome on Fedora.

Solution (a variant of what was linked here by @anothermindbomb):

What worked for me was to copy the Steam desktop entry from /usr/share/applications to ~./local/share/applications. I had to rename it because if it had the same name as the original in /usr/share/applications nothing happened (I chose “Steam Fix”):

...

Then run

update-desktop-database ~/.local/share/applications/

And now use the “Steam Fix” application instead!

Is this bug already identified and tracked? I tried searching on Simple Search but I didn’t find anything. Or should the bug be tracked in the Gnome project instead?
