Unable to detect S/PDIF audio device after latest update

I am unable to use my sound bar after the latest update because Fedora isn’t detecting the S/PDIF audio device.

For context, here’s the timeline

  • audio device is working (and I was using it for some time)
  • sudo dnf update
  • restart computer
  • audio device is not working

I’ve tried all the following without success…

  • restarting again
  • rolling back to an older version after rebooting
  • restarting pipewire
  • checking what devices alsa sees (doesn’t see the S/PDIF device)
  • searching throught dmesg logs to see if there were any errors or warnings - I didn’t see any, but I might have missed something
  • checked that the hardware is plugged in properly - although given that I didn’t mess with it during the update process, and it was working right before the restart, I don’t think this is a hardware issue

I’m at a loss on how to fix this issue

I had the same issue. I found a cachyos post that mentioned downgrading alsa-ucm which fixed it for me.

What version of alsa-ucm did you use? I downgraded to this, which I believe it what I had before the update, but no dice:

I just ran the dnf downgrade command and then restarted a bunch of the pipewire related services.

sudo dnf downgrade alsa-ucm
systemctl --user restart wireplumber pipewire pipewire-pulse

Installed Version: alsa-ucm.noarch 1.2.15.3-3.fc44 fedora

Ok, thanks! I tried that out and it didn’t seem to fix the issue. Onward to the next possible fix I guess. I have the same version of alsa-ucm (as you can see), and restarting pipewire didn’t seem to fix the issue.

Man, I feel really dumb now. I was just fiddling around with the sound settings and I turned on the (one) USB audio card, and after that was switched to 7.1 channels (or any of the others), it swtiched it’s name to S/PDIF. My speakers are back to working. No idea why it was named USB audio before.
