OK - so there’s this directory in files called ‘Desktop’, I copy a program there but no show on desktop - then make a link to it in same directory… stilll no shortcut on desktop… why? Is this a gjs thing?

Fedora has a lot of Workstations and Spins.
IIRC from your Conky thread, you are on Workstation. It’s a Gnome thing … There are Gnome extensions to bring back desktop icons. But I can’t recommend one, I am no longer using Gnome.
That is still there because of the alternative gnome desktops which are still existing, like mate and cinnamon as an example.
As already mentioned there are extensions to emulate the old desktop behavior.
As I came from the Mate desktop it took me a while to accept the changes Gnome made from V3+.
However today I do not look back and adapted quite well to the “new” stile.
I propose you to use the extension dash to dock. This extension is well maintained and mostly adapted when we release a new Fedora Version. You can add as many links you like alias as your monitor is wide
You can auto hide them and have always access to them without the need of digging on the desktop.

REAL NICE! Thanks, it does help indeed…
Thanks for your grateful edits, they are indeed deeply appreciated - I’m 72 years old and have multiple sclerosis which has made both hands numb and loss of dexterity… then there’s the Stage IV metastasized cancer surgery/chemo I’ve survived. ![]()
You can have a look here User:Ilikelinux - Fedora Project Wiki to check my changes I do when installing gnome.
I will take your age and health condition in consideration when helping you ![]()
