Thunderbird flatpak downgraded automatically!? | v115 -> v128 -> v115

I woke up this morning and decided to check for updates in Software app. I noticed a few, plus system updates so ran them. I remember seeing Thunderbird reported something weird like ‘v128 [arrowright] v115’. I am making that up but I remember two numbers and the left hand one was a higher number than right hand one.

I thought it was odd but carried on, assuming Software updates never go backwards so it must be some weird anomaly.

After rebooting, after updates done, I get this when I open Thunderbird…

image

I’m now confused and worried I screwed up my Thunderbird, in which is 20 years of email. Hoping someone can allay my fears and perhaps advise what I should do?
thanks

PS I have the flathub flatpak of TB installed

This is the perfect reminder to check your backups…

Was there a glitch at Thunderbird/Mozilla that enabled updates from 115 to v.128 ESR? I found 1907540 - Thunderbird autoupdates to version 128 esr which is not compatible with macOS 10.13
Officially, v128 is only available as direct download on thunderbird.net, but not yet in the distro’s or available as automatic update. Apparently, there was a small window of automatic updates, which you hit.

If you’d use your distro’s curated and tested rpm, this would not have happened.

I think you will have to wait for Thunderbird on Flathub to be updated to v. 128 to be able to use your profile again. In the meantime, create a new profile and sync your IMAP servers. Anything stores in local folders will be available again, when TB128 arrives as flatpak on flathub.

@joeyjonnson Hey man, Do you have your Thunderbird back up up to date ? Just to make sure.

I’ll go poking around and see what I can dig up.

So is the Flatpak update bugged?

Looks like they caught the mistake and disabled the auto-update to v128 again. Some people who updated their systems at the wrong moment got v128 …

see 1907540 - Thunderbird autoupdates to version 128 esr which is not compatible with macOS 10.13

Thunderbird 128 Nebula FAQ | Thunderbird Help says: “[…] Thunderbird 128.0esr is the same release channel as Thunderbird 115, only the name has changed”.

I think they messed it up…

I just tried it, and it did the same for me.

Unlike @joeyjonnson I have no important info there, and was about to do:

Added mozilla

Added thunderbird

Added flatpak

This is really unfortunate, since Mozilla released v128 in beta quality. If you look at the bug list, it’s full of known bugs.
This example illustrates the potential danger of flatpak usage from 3rd party. If TB was installed as rpm, this would have never happened.

There is a suggestion in this bug report that you may want to revert the org.mozilla.Thunderbird.Locale as well.

Backups - I still don’t have them running. Life’s been nuts for past few weeks, but it’s my highest priority for computer stuff now

I don’t really follow the discussion above. I do get there was a screw up causing this to happen to quite a few people, found two links referring but can’t really follow what i should actually DO to resolve it!

As for …

I don’t follow that, no idea how to create a profile, never have before. I just installed and used. I’d just like to open TB and get my emails again :frowning:

Happy to try steps to bring about that, but so many tips/ideas on bugzilla, i just don’t know what to do

Hey man, it’s basically 2 commands. I fixed my setup like this :

flatpak update --commit=2151b1e101f1266d135040c142f4c36a7e3373dc772e75a509a38efc39ded993 org.mozilla.Thunderbird

when done copy this.

flatpak update --commit=cbb56c7054d2893acf77b5cdfd0adc0588adc090edb49a92d79ac6e8f7983ad4 org.mozilla.Thunderbird.Locale

and that’s it ! Excuse the linewrapping, it’s just 1 command each.

Oh My, you’re a gem.

Had to add sudo but ran both and now TB opens. I am so grateful you’re here!

If this becomes an inconvenience for you. We can mask the update of Thunderbird.

How to freeze a Flatpak update ex: Thunderbird

howto

flatpak mask org.mozilla.Thunderbird

The Gnome Software Center GUI will still display an available update but will not update the application. You can remove the mask when you are comfortable with the next builds.
