I upgrade my Fedora 42 to Fedora 43, I lost all the images for the mp4 video files. I downloaded ffmpegthumbs and still didn’t help. Does anyone have any suggestions for me. Be gentle with me I’m kinda new to Fedora.
Assuming you are on Fedora Workstation / GNOME: Can you verify that the following packages are all installed?
- totem-video-thumbnailer
- gstreamer1-plugin-libav
- gstreamer1-plugins-ugly
- gstreamer1-plugins-ugly-free
- libavcodec-freeworld
Running rpm -q <package name here> should tell you whether it’s installed or not.
There have been reports that upgrading from F42 to F43 does not install glycin-thumbnailer, see [Fedora 43] no thumbnails in Nautilus (gnome files).
In addition to what @decathorpe suggested, maybe also check if glycin-thumbnailer is installed on your system.
Right - but specifically for videos, glycin-thumbnailer is not used.
Hello, thank you for responding. All packages you mentioned are installed. I learned not to upgrade anymore, if something works don’t F with it.
Hello, yes that package is installed.
Can you check whether deleting the $HOME/.cache/thumbnails/fail directory works?
If generating a thumbnail fails the file is marked as “not thumbnailable” and not retired unless that folder is cleared.
Hello, I am running Fedora 43 Mate, when I went into Gnome the thumbnails started to populate. Seems like it works with Gnome but not with Mate.
