The programs you use daily and why you use them

after the post about the idea of replacing libreoffice and how some users would like to have the fedora installation without any office suite, i was thinking on how different is everyone’s use of their pc

i personally use very little programs on my daily driver

i use firefox but im thinking on moving to librewolf, to use youtube, mail, whatsapp and read news

i use vlc when i want to play some video files i have locally

i use librefofice , writer in particular to write letters and documents

i use kcalc when i need to make some numbers for cost of builds, stuff i have to pay

jdownloader when i have to download some large file that needs something more capable than just the web browser

document scanner to scan some images or documents a couple times per month

gimp for some occasional project editing a image(gimp is not a easy tool to use to be honest, looking for a replacement)

xnview mp to look at images, it also can interface with the scanner and capture images directly

spectacle, i often share screen captures of things i am looking at with friends

some of the programs i have, i use them perhaps each month or two, only firefox sees daily use

Rhythmbox for music. I like the multi-pane layout.

Qbittorrent for dowloading all the Fedora torrents I want and need.

Lutris for running games via Wine. Sure I could Wine more, but Lutris is so easy to use.

rythmbox? i havent heard about that one in years :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

I’m open to suggestions to replace Rhythmbox, but all the new stuff I have tried wants to automate everything. Winamp used to be the best (back when Windoze was some kind of acceptable OS).

Bengal Download Manager for downloading files. A good alternative of IDM in linux.

Firefox for web browsing.
Emacs for code development (although I also use vim for quick edits; go figure).
Ptyxis, because I’m an old Unix nerd and do lots of stuff with the terminal.
Mock for test builds of Fedora packages.
Musescore to pretend I’m a song writer.
Steam for amusement (although I occasionally revert to nethack).
Evince to read PDFs.
Virt-manager to spin up test VMs.
Podman for a few services I don’t completely trust.
Libreoffice Writer and Calc to work on various documents.
Element to join my family’s matrix chat channel.
Lots of coding tools, some obscure and/or arcane.

I used Rhythmbox for a long time before recently switching to Tauon but is it not still the default audio player on GNOME?

I think that Rhythmbox used to be the default Gnome music player, but they ‘upgraded’ it about a year or two ago to whatever it is now.

Lots of stock software (Firefox, LibreOffice, etc.).

Strawberry for music because I like something that’s organized visually.
Notesnook for note taking that can sync across numerous device types.
LocalSend for sharing files between devices with any OS.

I mostly only use a few things:

  • ptyxis with byobu for multiple sessions
  • taskwarrior + timewarrior for task/time tracking
  • vim with plugins for all editing (code, journaling in LaTeX etc.)
  • neomutt +offlineimap + msmtp for email
  • weechat for irc/slack
  • qutebrowser for browsing
  • gnome-pomodoro + extension
  • evolution for calendar (tried gnome-calendar, but returned to evolution)
  • newsboat for rss feed reading
  • dejadup runs for backups from time to time
  • syncthing for syncing between different machines
  • pass for password management
  • rarely use libreoffice etc—mostly only for work that require use of docs/spreadsheets, and even then sometimes they use docx etc., so i need to use a windows machine if the online office bit doesnt work
  • zathura for pdf reading
  • vimiv for images (vimlike)
  • last few months: opencode for assisting with development etc related tasks

Most of my work is done in different byobu profiles in the terminal.

Edit: turns out it’s quite a few things, not only a few things..

My primary uses:
A mix of Brave and WaterFox for internet
LibreOffice for all the word processing, etc.
Audacious for rocking my tune collection
Document Scanner
VaccumTube for watching YouTube without the ads
Gimp for the types of photo editing I can’t do with LibreOffice
I have Blender and Godot for my son who is learning 3D modeling and platform game coding (so those get a lot of use, just not from me, lol)
And an assortment of light games like Kpatience (Solitaire), Sudoku and Go-Minesweeper when I need to exercise my ol’ grey matter.

indeed, you are a real power user, thank you for sharing that

would you recomend waterfox? i have been thinking on moving to librewolf, but it has its issues with some pages, not loading certain elements, it is supposedly just a more private firefox, but it is different to firefox

i recently wiped every single game i saw preinstalled on kde fedora 45, when i play games, i end up doing it on steam windows, some of my games do not work on linux yet, and if i install kpatience i might use it nonstop, too adictive lol
