Thank you for fixing the content moderation robot in January

I had to take a break from Fedora, because of multi issues, one of which is I was being spammed with content that illegal images, and I couldn’t do anything about it, then I read on AI that the bot was updated, and now I feel the machine is safer, so that I can actually get on and start contributing again. I want to try working with OpenClaw.

What are you talking about?

I read about this from Gemini

So I am feeling safe now, I had some unsolicited chatroom invitations and my client I was using couldn’t report it, I just reported it today from 6 months ago, to fedora.im and I feel safe now that I can possibly get on the server without having unsolicited material

In January 2026, the most prominent content moderation “robots” on the Matrix chat network were Draupnir and its predecessor, Mjolnir.

While both remain active, the start of 2026 marked a significant shift in how Matrix handles spam and moderation. Here are the key “robots” and tools that dominated the scene in January:

1. Draupnir

As of early 2026, Draupnir has largely become the “gold standard” for community moderation. It is a more modern, feature-rich fork of the original Mjolnir bot. In January 2026, Draupnir received significant attention due to its extended NLnet grant, which funded new goals for improving user safety and community management. It is designed to:

  • Synchronize ban lists across multiple rooms.

  • Protect communities from “raids” and mass-spam events.

  • Automate the removal of malicious users based on shared policy lists.

2. Mjolnir

The “original” moderation bot. While many developers have moved toward Draupnir, Mjolnir is still widely used by many older communities for its robust ability to protect rooms using policy lists (ban lists that you can subscribe to, much like an ad-blocker for chat).

3. Policy Servers (The “Proactive” Shift)

In January 2026, the Matrix community began moving away from purely “reactive” bots (which delete spam after it appears) toward proactive moderation.

  • MSC4284 (Policy Servers): This was a major topic at FOSDEM 2026 (held Jan 31 – Feb 1). These servers act like a firewall, checking messages against moderation policies before they are even delivered to other users.

  • Policyserv: A specific tool mentioned in January reports that allows room admins to test these proactive moderation features .

I am uncertain that your discussion belongs here. This is the ask fedora forum and does not use the bots you mention.

I think you meant to note this on the matrix channels.

Yes, Fedora Matrix team have done a great job in preventing the waves of spam that were present.

Welcome back.

Here’s some background on what was done:

As it says there, most of the measures to address this were taken in June–September 2025. I’m not aware of anything significantly changing in January 2026 that would have affected the Fedora matrix rooms.
