System suddenly freezes - Fedora i3 spin

I have had issues with freezing on my system, it either being with freezing on shutdown, rebooting or when using the desktop after suspending, latter which is the case right now. :frowning:

I have tried:

  1. Reinstalling my system
  2. Reinstalling the NVIDIA drivers via RPMFusion
  3. blacklisting the noveau drivers in “/etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf”

“inxi -Fxzz” output:

After having my system suddenly freeze like its a still image :framed_picture: i was forced to do a shutdown via the power button. After booting back up again i found that there were suddenly a lot of logs in the journal via the command: “journalctl -b -1 -r”, which i have uploaded to as a .txt file here:
https://0x0.st/KrOZ.txt

If you dont need x11 for certain special tasks, you could try Sway WM.
Over time, support for x11 is diminishing on Fedora.

I am unsure about the support for NVIDIA GPUs though.

I don’t want any more issues than i am having.

Support for Nvidia will be the same or better on Sway.
Make sure you use the RPM Fusion Nvidia drivers and install instructions.

You can install Sway at the same time as i3, simply launch Sway from a TTY after login.

After having suspended the PC for a couple of hours i came back to it and didn’t have issues at first, but leaving the monitor to blank out again caused the PC to freeze while the monitor was blanked out. Here are the logs:

Freezing as in the desktop environment becomes entirely unresponsive?

Have you tried using a 2nd system, remotely ssh into the symptomatic system, and journalctl -fk to see if you see any hints of what could be happening during the hang? If you can initiate the remote shell with this command before the problem happens, the system might have enough time to report a kernel call trace or other useful information.

Another possibility is journalctl -f which will follow all messages not just kernel messages. This log will be quite a bit noisier, hence starting out suspecting the kernel (and confirming or denying this) might save time.

Does the shell remain responsive even once the desktop freezes?

Does the hang every recover?

These will give some hints what’s going on, and narrow things down. Subsequent troubleshooting will depend on what you uncover.

My issues seem to be resolved. I am unsure about which exact troubleshooting step fixed this issue, but i mainly did 5 things:

  1. Installing NVIDIA GPU drivers properly.
    I followed the discord guide which is mostly just following the RPMfusion guide, but additionally running sudo dracut --force. I also gave akmods ample time to build the drivers, everytime i do an update via dnf & a new nvidia driver shows up, i make sure to let akmods build the driver for at least minimum 10 minutes.

  2. Editing /usr/lib/modprobe.d/nvidia-power-management.conf
    Setting the option “options nvidia NVreg_PreserveVideoMemoryAllocations=1” to: options nvidia NVreg_PreserveVideoMemoryAllocations=0

  3. Making sure that Windows read-only NVME is unmounted + Turning 2nd monitor off before suspend
    I have a rofi suspend script which runs different commands before locking, suspending, etc.
    In ‘/etc/fstab’ file i have the following entry which mounts my windows drive so that i can access files (read-only):

/dev/disk/by-uuid/F68A09C08A097E7D /media/WINDOWS ntfs-3g noauto,ro,nosuid,nodev,nofail 0 0

The commands from the script i run before suspending includes: sudo umount -f /media/WINDOWS and xrandr --output DP-4 --off

  1. Removing NVIDIA HD audio device with udev rule
    Make sure that the output of sudo lspci | grep 01 outputs the NVIDIA Audio HD audio device with number “01:00.1”
    Then create the file: /etc/udev/rules.d/10-remove-nvidia-audio.rules and add:
ACTION=="add", KERNEL=="0000:01:00.1", SUBSYSTEM=="pci", RUN+="/bin/sh -c 'echo 1 > /sys/bus/pci/devices/0000:01:00.1/remove'"
  1. Changing UEFI settings
    I modified setting “Restore AC after power loss” to “Last state” or “Power on”.
    I also tweaked some possibly unrelated UEFI settings such as “boot support” to “BIOS+Legacy”

I will mark this post as the solution if i don’t have any issues in the following 1-2 weeks!

Aside from rare slow reboots/shutdowns i haven’t had any issues with suspending.

Recently i created the file etc/udev/rules.d/10-remove-nvidia-usbc.rules with the contents:

ACTION==“add”, KERNEL==“0000:01:00.3”, SUBSYSTEM==“pci”, RUN+=“/bin/sh -c ‘echo 1 > /sys/bus/pci/devices/0000:01:00.3/remove’”

In my case this seems to be harmless as my GPU doesn’t have any USB-C ports on its I/O.

I have updated my suspend script which i run via rofi or i3status-rs:

#!/bin/bash
#sudo umount -f /media/WINDOWS
xrandr --output DP-4 --off
playerctl pause
i3lock -t -i ~/Pictures/img103.png && sleep 1
systemctl suspend; sleep 5; sleep 5; amixer set Master unmute; xrandr --output DP-2 --primary --mode 1920x1080 --rate 144.00 --pos 0x420 --output DP-4 --mode 1920x1080 --rate 144.00 --pos 1920x0 --rotate left

The following is my shutdown/reboot script:

#!/bin/bash
sudo umount -f /media/WINDOWS
sudo umount -f /media/SSD1TB
sudo umount -f /media/NTFSHDD4TB
sudo umount -f /media/EXT4HDD4TB/
sudo umount -f /mnt/4TB
xrandr --output DP-4 --off
#systemctl stop --user xdg-desktop-portal-gtk.service
pkill baobab
pkill dunst
playerctl pause
systemctl poweroff
