Switching to Fedora

Hello everyone, I’m working on switching to Fedora. I thought I’d drop in, set up an account, and say hello in case I get stuck with a problem at some point in the near future.

A few years ago, I gave up on Windows after using it most of my life. I’ve hopped around on Mint, Ubuntu, and Zorin. This is my first time of seriously branching away from anything Debian based (meaning for more than a day or two).

I’ve got Fedora 43 with KDE Plasma installed and I’m loving it. It feels more polished and user friendly than Kubuntu, which surprised me since the Ubuntu family is supposedly more beginner friendly. And it’s definitely more stable than Neon.

I had a hard time figuring out media codecs (would love to see Fedora make that easier for new people), but that was the only major hiccup I had out of the box. Everything else has been working smoothly. I’ve hardly had to touch the terminal at all.

Greetings, and welcome! :slightly_smiling_face:

During initial installation there’s an option to add additional multimedia support.

Post-install, RPM Fusion has a handy guide for adding codecs that aren’t bundled with stock Fedora due to a variety of reasons: https://rpmfusion.org/Howto/Multimedia

Yes, the trick was learning about the existence of RPM Fusion since there’s nothing in the welcome screen about it.

Welcome to Fedora, your ubuntu experience will come in handy!
