Stuttering on startup

,

Hello everyone,

I am a brand new Linux user and after trialing several distros, I’ve landed on Fedora 42 KDE as the one I like the most.

I knew jumping into Linux wouldn’t be straightforward, so I prepared myself for some teething problems. Sure enough, I’ve got a few and I’m looking for some help sorting them out.

I’ve encountered several problems and they are all unrelated to each other. I figure it’s best to post them in separate discussions to make it easier for future users to find any answers.

The first problem has to do with stuttering after booting up.

Here’s the brief history of what I’ve tried and discovered on my own.

The first time I booted Fedora’s live environment there was no stutter.

After completing the install for the first time on my SSD (1TB with 500GB dedicated to a fresh Windows 11), everything was working fine. The system was updated and I began using it normally. At this point, there was no stuttering.

I ran into another issue and rebooted my system in an attempt to fix something. Not only did a reboot not fix that issue (related to installing a game), stuttering was introduced into the system. At that point, I wasn’t that far into setting everything up, so I figured it would be easier to just reinstall Fedora and start over from scratch.

Then it got weird. Even in the live environment from the USB, there was stuttering. I went ahead with the reinstall anyway and even with the fresh install, the stuttering was there. After running the updates, I went online and started looking for answers when, suddenly, it stopped.

I learned after a few days of use that this stuttering seemed transient and was, perhaps, some weird post start up lag. Opening up programs seems to reduce the amount of time it takes for the stuttering to cease. If I just leave it on the desktop and do nothing, the system tends to stutter for a lot longer before resolving.

This is all very modern AMD hardware on a desktop.

I’d be happy to provide any additional diagnostics; just tell me what you need and how to fetch it.

Cheers!

Often the newest hardware has more problems than hardware from two years ago.

In another thread, a user reported that updating the BIOS fixed a stuttering issue.

I was running the BIOS from March but I updated it to the most recent version and that hasn’t resolved it. Is there a way to post some sort of diagnostic that might show what is causing the hangups?
