Strange Issue with monitor. Randomly refreshes screen as if display settings were changed

Hello, I have been having an issue with my Samsung 4k 144hz (Model code: LS28AG700NNXZA) monitor on Linux specifically (I have windows with a different drive, and hook a MacBook up to it regularly and it does not reproduce the same issue)(Secure boot is disabled).

My GPU is a NVIDIA 2070 Super. I have installed Nvidia drivers using the akmod-nvidia package from RPM Fusion.

It has been happening across most distributions sans PoP! OS. I am currently running Fedora 38 KDE spin and would like to stay here and just get the problem solved rather than swapping back to PoP! (The issue was the reason I left Fedora back in F36 days)

The issue is also present with X11 and Wayland

Essentially the monitor randomly likes to refresh itself in the same way it does if you change resolution, refresh rate, or scaling in the system settings. It happens most frequently when waking from sleep, changing tabs on browser, or any big content change on the screen like opening an app.

I have checked with both HDMI and DP connections, same result. I keep the monitor itself set to 120hz as that is the highest it can go on Linux without tinkering.

The problem seems to happen with both Nvidia proprietary drivers as well as nouveau drivers.

Really at a loss as how to troubleshoot from here and it has been a hard question for me to google as monitor jargain is not something I’m familiar with.

Here is a link to a video of the issue:
Link to video of issue

lspci -v | grep nvidia
	Kernel driver in use: nvidia
	Kernel modules: nouveau, nvidia_drm, nvidia
	Kernel driver in use: nvidia-gpu
	Kernel modules: i2c_nvidia_gpu

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

I would like to note that I am having no issue with the monitor while having my AMD ThinkPad plugged in with HDMI

Hello @unhinged ,
Welcome to Fedora!

Try the fpaste command to get some system info … from a command line type fpaste --sysinfo --printonly then C/P the output to a response here. That should give someone trying to help the info to start with. Unfortunately I do not have a 4K monitor to test these issue with.

* EFI boot manager output (without results: "efibootmgr -v"):
     N/A

It seems to have calmed down on this boot currently and not occured, but usually after a sleep it seems to happen again whenever I’ve gotten my hopes up lol.

Intermittent issues can be so much fun

I think a resent update has solved my issue! I think this package:

linux-firmware-20230404-149.fc38.noarch

That i noticed got installed when I was skimming through that fpaste command did the trick. I googled what it was and landed on:
https://bodhi.fedoraproject.org/updates/FEDORA-2023-1cf0937309
Which has as the first change:

“nvidia: update Tu10x and Tu11x signed firmware to support newer Turing HW”

Which is exactly what im using. Literally elated right now. This issue has been plaguing my system for months.

Thank you too Stephan Snow for the comment that helped me understand why it just all of a sudden stopped. I owe you a coffee or beer.

Will mark as solved.

Well I may have spoke too soon. It seems to still happen if i change my monitor to 120hz. If it doesn’t happen at 60hz at all, which it hasn’t I’m happy.
