UPDATE: I fixed the RPM version of steam. It was fixed by creating a steam.destop entry in ~/.local/share/applications/. Discovered this after running steam directly from terminal worked normally. A steam.desktop entry existed in /usr/share/applications/ but it was empty. Since it’s working, I am removing the flatpak version. Close thread unless anyone can enlighten me as to what’s been causing these issues.
For starters, I’m quite frustrated by this. I’ve had this issue for months, since installing my OS, and I’ve attempted to get help with it in other places like Discord and Matrix. I’d really like to get this fixed.
Initially my issue is related to the flatpak version of Steam. It runs fine in all other ways, but if I do not open steam within a few minutes of booting my system, then it will reliably crash my session and log me out if I attempt to run it.

Just guessing but It looks like Steam attempts to update itself, and then tries to destroy an update UI window, Destroy window which may cause the X Window System and BadWindow (invalid Window parameter) errors. I thought it might be due to gnome extensions (gTile) but I disabled all extensions and the issue still occurs.
I have also come back to my PC after being AFK and find that I/O including screen isn’t working. My monitor doesn’t detect any input (on the relevant DisplayPort) and touching keyboard/mouse doesn’t do anything, nor reconnecting monitor cable. My guess is that gnome-shell crashed and logged me out. As for why I/O stops working I have no idea, but I have experienced this issue in the past on different systems.
I saved the following log but I can’t remember if it was the flatpak version or the rpm version. I decided to include it here anyway. The output is from command journalctl –since “2 minutes ago” | grep “steam”.

I also noticed a system failure in problem reporting, says it’s a tainted kernel. I posted this on a new thread here.
The issue with the RPM version of the app is, though I was able to log in, once I’m logged in Steam doesn’t actually open. It’s running in the background but no windows open. Also every few seconds my active window becomes inactive, window becomes grey for a second, as if Steam is attempting to take control of the active window? According to Problem Reporting, steamwebhelper crashes. Problem details:

Also, I have no clue why, but when I run journalctl --since “2026-01-06 23:08:00” --until “2026-01-06 23:12:00” nothing returns, even though the logs clearly show they are included in that timeframe. My logs cut off after 22:48:34. Feel free to ignore this issue as my main issue is with steam.
It may be worthy to note that I am having more and more issues on Fedora lately. I’m having gnome-shell crashes on a totally separate system with different hardware running WS42, sometimes involving wireplumber. I don’t know if they’re related. I hope I’ve provided enough info. Thanks.
