Just upgrade from f39 to f41 and startx doesn’t work, it immediately “disconnects”… I was using KDE desktop.
startx
is intended to start x11 for the desktop. KDE no longer installs x11 support by default.
I am curious why you are using startx
since the default boot brings the user to the graphical desktop?
Before the ugrade (and for many months till now) for some reason (the login process appeared too slow imho) I decided to avoid the graphical login and I was typing startx from an initial terminal…
ChatGPT suggested a few things and I have typed sudo systemctl start sddm
now I am in GNOME on Wayland but I would prefer to return to KDE.
Eventually ChatGPT suggested startplasma-wayland
which is maybe the solution to this problem.
Interestingly, startxfce4
, which I was also using before the upgrade, remained untouched and is still working fine. It seems like the spins prioritize maintaining a smooth experience for their users, whereas the main Fedora developers might not mind risking some churn among users every now and then.
Actually I have found that startplasma
is better than startplasma-wayland
, in terms of stability (especially with youtube videos).
