Ok is it just me or is it the same for everyone? Since the change of command the stability of fedora seems to be gone for good. I’ve been using fedora since around 8 . The best fedora releases for me where around 13 to 15 if I remember right. Before systemd. Now since things changed with new people in charge well things are very different. First hit was the copy and paste bug you find this not in a final release or a beta release but an alpha release. then the problem from the very first release a lot of the packages in the repos did not work unetbootin being one and many more. Then for a while it be came more stable. Now all the sudden my usb logitech keyboard does not work on the crypt password some times on the login screen and never works in terminal. Shoot even the space bar does not work in terminal so its not password only in terminal but it works fine in the text editor. To top it all off the firefox update removed all my bookmarks ,history ,extensions, settings and theme twice. Fixed it and it happened again. So is this the same for every one or just me? So now I’m looking for an alternate to fedora something that’s not a beta release with bug after bug rushed out like its on an assembly line. Any suggestions . I would like some thing with a live image that i can try with the mate desktop as it’s not a resource hog like gnome or kde. I would like a system that I spend more time using than fixing. I was thinking about opensuse but I just started looking. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated . Oh and while I’m posting here does anyone know of a fix for the keyboard. Tried many fixes. Some of which borked the system and AI is like asking some one who has not fixed it. Just throws out what on the net. Thanks
I like the new people.
I like systemd.
Fedora is stable for me, but some people are seeing bugs on F44 KDE and some on Gnome. New systems will always have bugs.
Try Ubuntu. Lot of people like that.
All my systems on Fedora are very stable. Not quite Debian-stable, but very reliable.
In my experience, if your primary goal is stability, Debian is the way to go. It’s not the most bleeding edge, but that is how they achieve stability.
There are many distros you can try either as a live environment or in a virtual machine (my personal preference).
Stability is, I think, in the eye of the beholder. In my experience many, but not all, of these issues are due to adding 3rd party repos/software or heavy customization.
This increases the chances of breakage especially when upgrading to newer releases.
Not saying this is the case here but certainly should be considered.
Debian is stable if that is what you want.
I also recommend EndeavourOS, which you can add the MATE desktop to, but be aware it is about as close to vanilla Arch as can be. This means you will need to build it up, adding the packages you want/need.
Their flagship distro comes with KDE Plasma and is, in my opinion, very stable.
Well I been through it all with Fedora .Everything from the old days with selinux blocking printing or net access. That was before selinux trouble shooter. Systemd was a bit buggy at first but was fixed quickly. All the bugs Nvidia drivers with an intel gpu as well .Pulse then all the bugs in pipewire. Stability starts with hardware. Example I built a tower with 2 friends. All of us the same hardware. All with the same wireless keyboard logitech lol .The same one I use on my laptop. Now i have a wired usb keyboard as does one of my friends the other is on his way to buy one lol. We all run fedora. I only use the tower for video editing and resource hungry jobs. I still havent figured out why fedora tells me that the tv I have attached to my laptop is seen as a 72 inch when its 32. It use to see it as it was but it does not affect anything so I never bothered with it. Today I’m going to install unetbootin again . See if that’s been fixed. Not a fan of fedora media writer because I’m not sure I can use the the usb drive properly with out clearing it with media writer first. As far as firefox goes well that to me is not a bug that was a mistake with who ever took over managing the package. No problem there I back up everything. Who ever it is will figure it out. That’s how I learn . When I run into a problem or make one I learn. Your all right fedora is very stable most of the time. Has been for me for a very long time. To me it seems as I dont know what goes on with lead changes and all the other behind the scene things. It does seem to me that people have left and new people came in. The reason I use mate is because this is a bare bones laptop i3 8th gen 4 gigs of ram . mate never uses more than 1.6 gigs of ram, works great on this little laptop. Thanks for all your input. If i do go for a backup os I think its going to be mint as the have a mate spin and I tested it before. Thanks for all your replies. now I’m off to ask fedora and see if anyone has actually fixed this keyboard issue . I tired of walking across the room and getting on my knees to use the lap top keyboard. Has to be the kernel maybe as the 3 updates with the 7. series all have different effects on the keyboard
Might be me using atomic (kinoite) but it’s been solid as a rock so far. Hardware also plays nice, not going to lie, with all AMD and everything wired so no bluetooth or wireless. So far not a hitch. Upgrade from 43 to 44 also went flawlessly.
Used a drawing tablet and a steering wheel set, which also worked without any hassle. Can’t really complain about anything. Even my brief delve into Sway atomic spin was a breeze and a fun learning experiment.
I find it hard to read your huge paragraph, please consider putting line breaks between separate ideas.
Some where in there is something about tv screen size… edid error maybe.
Thanks for the replies all your right Barry. I haven’t been in a forum for 8 years . I guess I got carried away.
As far as that little tid bit you spotted I have an LG TV . From what I read at the time edid are messed up so I left things alone. Actually makes no difference that I can see
Oh and don’t worry. I won’t really be posting any more after this. Back to reading.
Well after going through just about every fix out there. I finally updated the desktop to use from 42 to 43. Talked to my friends and both told me that their usb keyboards were working again a short time later. Should have checked back.
Back to the laptop. I talked with someone else. He told me to boot down. Take the battery out clean everything. So i disassembled the laptop had to the battery does not come out to swap. Cleaned the fan the dust every usb port and the dvd drive. Let it sit over night. While i was waiting dissembled the keyboard and mouse [usb wireless]. The mouse was not bad. The key board did not look bad either till I started to clean the plastic circuit boards the rubber for the keys. The rubber was not bad but the plastic circuits were. The cotton swabs were black when I cleaned in between the two circuits. Put it all back together the cpu the key board and mouse. Booted used the laptop keyboard to updated first thing{new kernel}. Rebooted with the usb wireless and everything works. So I have to apologize to all who work on Fedora. Other than a short interruption with the key board{should have checked back}. I think some where along the line it became a hardware issue So I apologize to all.
