Some random words have weird glyphs in them

Hi!

I have this weird issue for a while now on Fedora 37, and hoped fedora 38 might fixed it. But unfortunately it didn’t.

Some letters in words have some weird glyphs in them, it is somewhat random, as in I have no clue why they occur at various locations. But when it is happening, it is consistent happening.

For example; the Spotify application always has those glyphs in the artist name in the ‘currently playing’ info box. And some websites have them consistently in the breadcrumbs, while others don’t.

This is how it looks:
Screenshot from 2023-04-20 08-02-39

I have no clue where to start, hoping someone is familiar with this issue and has a solution :-)!

Hi @wouterrutgers , welcome to the community!

It’s probably a missing font issue. Are these related to some particular language, or it is just English? Can you please create a new user to see if the issue persists too?

The output of fpaste --sysinfo --printonly would also be very useful to us to get some basic info on your system.

Hi @ankursinha, thank you!

It’s (as far as I can tell) not related to a particular language, artists names are not really a ‘language’ I guess. If you meant character set, I’m not sure. It’s a annoying one to test, because I don’t know how to trigger it :stuck_out_tongue:!

I’ve thought that it might be a font issue too, but the weird thing is, if I take the same string of letters and put them anywhere else (can test that on websites, not so much on spotify ofcourse) they’ll render correctly. Also, sometimes highlighting the words by selecting them makes it so it renders correctly too. Which makes me think it’s not the specific font that causes these rendering issues.

Output of fpaste:

hrm, not sure then—how about a new user? Any chance you can replicate the issue there? If you can, it’s a system issue. If you can’t, it’s something in the user configuration.

Ah, I did try that after your last post, forgot to mention it ;-)!

So I created a new user and opened Spotify as that is the application where it consistently is rendering incorrectly in the artist name. But unfortunately the issue exists.

I just thought that it might have something to do with the ultrawide screen I’m using (3840 x 1600), but when unplugging the screen and just viewing on my 1920x1080 laptop the issue still exists!

If it wasn’t a laptop I use for work where it takes me a day or so to setup my development environment again I would try reinstalling fedora :stuck_out_tongue:.

Sounds like it is not a problem with fonts (missing or wrong fonts), but with the font rendering of those affected apps.

I believe Spotify desktop app uses CEF (?), so if the affected browser is Chrome/Chromium-based, that’d be a clue.

  • How is Spotify installed?
  • Which browser has this problem? How is the browser installed?

I use Chrome, which is installed by manually downloading the rpm of their website. Spotify is installed via flathub.

But you’re onto something! I don’t seem to have the issue in Firefox!

I feel stupid that I didn’t even think of testing in another browser… I also had the issue in Spotify so figured it would be a system-wide issue.

I’ll Google tonight when I have some time now I have more specific search terms to see if I can fix this issue.

Thank you both so far!

Hi,

It’s been a while but it has been fixed!

What I’ve read somewhere that gave me a clue was someone that had similar issues and said it looked like hardware acceleration without the proper hardware.

This made me google “intel gpu fedora” which put me at Intel Graphics - Best practices and settings for hardware acceleration?.

I followed those instructions to correctly enable the intel GPU.

After a reboot, the issues were gone!

Thank you guys for the help!
