I just started using Linux and have already installed Solaar to get my Logitech MX3 mouse working. I’ve watched all the videos about what to do when setting up Fedora for the first time, and I’ve followed those steps to the best of my understanding and knowledge.
However, it turns out Solaar doesn’t work that well, and many of the mouse’s functions are not working. The most important feature for me—the ability to go backward and forward using the buttons on the side of the mouse—isn’t functioning, and that’s something I really rely on for browsing. Having to drag the cursor to click buttons is pretty tiring.
**What’s frustrating is that when I connected a cheaper mouse, those forward/backward buttons worked fine. Can anyone offer some advice? Should I just give up on this mouse, or is there something I can do to fix it? I’m also new to Linux, so any help would be greatly appreciated!
Backward and forward buttons are standard keys that should work on any system, regardless of device and operating system. My guess would be that your buttons are bound to some kind of special macro. I also have a Logitech device and Logitech macros don’t work here. If you still have access to G Hub on another system, the simplest solution would be to open it and just simply try to revert back changes made on those buttons if any and bind them to the standard Forward/Backward actions. If you don’t have access to G Hub, install piper, that’s the Linux equivalent of Logitech G Hub, it can help you to rebind the buttons on your device if it’s supported. If your device is wireless, you will have to connect it with USB while managing it in piper.
Alternatively you can use the ratbagctl commandline tool, it can list your current configuration and make changes to it, the “button 4” and “button 5” actions refers to the standard forward/backward action.
Wellm turns out that the problem is actually from the mouse. I managed to find a WIN machine and tested the mouse and only 3 buttons work. Even when connected with Logitech options, I’m unable to edit the functions of the buttons. I’ll reach Logitech and see what can be done. Thank you anyway.
