Sluggish trackpad on XPS 17 9710

Having issues with the trackpad becoming sluggish at random, will sometimes fix itself while closing the lid and reopening, or just on its own at random. I believe it’s an issue with some powersaving feature but not sure.

Currently running KDE fedora, but happens on gnome as well.

After doing some research I discovered the some info about a supposed hardware flaw in the trackpad, something about it not being grounded, and reviewing the issue tracker on lib input about this did not contribute much to a solution. The tracker also has the “not our bug” tag which is great, so I suppose it wont be fixed anytime soon.

I don’t know why is this is only an issue on linux, as this does not occur on windows, very annoying.

just posting it here as well, in case anyone encounters the same problem. This problem still exists in Fedora 41. Updating the Touchpad Firmware seems to resolve it.

Post that pointed me in the right direction.

@rhe403 thanks for sharing the fix! Maybe a silly question, but the driver files are all .exe files. How did you update the driver in Fedora?

It’s been a while, but I believe I booted off a Windows partition back then and updated the firmware that way. Just to note, it still occasionally feels sluggish at times, but less often and less severe than before upgrading the firmware.
