Silverblue freezes during shutdown

My Silverblue 44 would freeze during shutdown since about three weeks ago and I had to hold the power button to turn off my PC. Using terminal to shut down doesn’t change anything. I’m using the up-to-date Silverblue 44 and even tried to upgrade to Silverblue 45, but didn’t change the outcome unfortunately.

The output of journalctl -b -1 -r is below. I’m not sure if the problem is because my system can’t unmount the home folder?

/var/home unmounts in your log, so the home folder is not the cause. The journal ends at systemd-binfmt before the final shutdown steps, so the freeze happens after what it can record. Run sudo rpm-ostree kargs --delete-if-present=rhgb --delete-if-present=quiet, reboot once, then shut down and note the last line on screen when it freezes. If a stop job is waiting, the screen shows “A stop job is running for” followed by the unit name. If it ends at “reboot: Power down”, the hang is in firmware or a driver and you should check for BIOS updates.

I used an AI assistant to help draft this, and I’ve tested the commands above.

I did what you suggested and I took a photo during the shutdown. Does it mean my BIOS has problems? My firmware is up to date.

The OS finished shutting down so the freeze is likely in firmware or a driver after that point even if you have current firmware. Does it still freeze if you shut down with nothing plugged into the Thunderbolt ports?

Drafted with AI, reviewed by me.

Thanks Chris much appreciated.

Unfortunately unplugging everything including the thunderbolt doesn’t make any difference.

Does a reboot finish normally, or does it freeze at the same point as a power off?

Drafted with AI, reviewed by me.

Same as power off.

It can’t be the power-off step itself, then. It’s most likely a device that doesn’t reset cleanly after the OS stops, either in firmware or in a driver that changed around three weeks ago. Does it still freeze if you boot a Fedora live USB and shut down from there?

Drafted with AI.

I tried to reboot using Fedora Workstation live image (Silverblue doesn’t have it) and I was able to reboot as usual. However, the live image wasn’t up-to-date and will reset to the original release version after update.

I’m going to try workstation 45 image tomorrow since it’s released about a month ago, which was about the same time as my Silverblue starts having shutdown issue.

It’s most likely a kernel or driver change that came in after that release, then.

If the Workstation 45 image also reboots normally, which kernel version does uname -r show on your Silverblue install?

Drafted with AI, reviewed by me.

I found the culprit was the new kernel when plugging to my Dell docking station. I was able to shut down my PC when connecting to the normal charger rather than the Dell dock. I did a few testings using Fedora Workstation 45 and OpenSUSE Aeon live image (rolling release with up-to-date kernel), and I was able to replicate the issue. I didn’t have the same issue when using Workstation 44 image, which uses a older kernel.

Guess this is a upstream kernel bug.

To answer your question:

dadstick@fedora:~$ uname -r
7.2.8-200.fc44.x86_64

Boot the previous deployment from the GRUB menu, and if its kernel shuts down cleanly on the dock, pin it with sudo ostree admin pin and that deployment’s index from rpm-ostree status so the next update doesn’t remove it.

Also report it against the kernel component at https://bugzilla.redhat.com with the dock model and the last kernel version that shut down cleanly.
