Severe display glitches on Fedora 43, Intel ARC B580

I just installed Fedora 43 on both my all-AMD laptop (everything is fine) and my PC with an Intel ARC B580. The display is glitched to the point of being unusable. And everything worked fine this morning, on Fedora 42…

Please specify which fedora version or spin you have installed.

What does glitched mean? All windows, complete desktop or only some windows like gtk4 programs ( gnome files or gnome settings?

Have you tried to update the system? Maybe try switching to a text terminal
CTRL ALT F4 login and run sudo dnf upgrade and reboot.

You could also try adding GSK_RENDERER=ngl to /etc/environment and reboot.

I already updated the system, and all windows, even the terminal, show all kind of artifacts. I’m running Fedora 43 Workstation.

I’ll test some apps and come back with the results.

Forget it, all the screen is doing the mambo…

If the desktop refresh rate is > 60Hz, can you replicate with a refresh rate set to 60Hz?

Can you replicate booting a F43 Gnome live iso?

I suspect that this could be a regression in mesa. If the LIVE iso does not have the problem then downgrade mesa sudo dnf downgrade mesa\*.

There is also a newer kernel 6.17.6 available you could try.

It does the same if I run it from the F43 Gnome live ISO. I’ll try the kernel now…

The kernel update solves the glitching issue, I’ll test for a longer time and report back.

Well, the display glitches remain, they are less severe, but present nonetheless.

Well, it seems that this kernel have a significantly improved driver. It’s only a matter of time and a few updated kernels before the remaining bugs are fixed.
Keep an eye on bodhi to stay informed about new kernel versions.

I’m having this problem too. Fresh fedora workstation 43 install on a newly-built and otherwise working system with an intel B580 GPU. I’ve uploaded a video showing some of the issues. There were also blue and white boxes appearing randomly but I couldn’t get those to show up for the recording.

Same issue here after upgrading from F42.

Intle Arc B580, Firmware Version 21.1137.

My initial impression is that I’m only seeing glitches in GTK applications and they are somewhat intermittent, although I haven’t looked into it more thoroughly yet.

Now that I think about it, I had similar but less severe issues like this on another system I rebuilt recently that was running fedora workstation 43 with an old nvidia GPU temporarily while I was booted into a live environment testing something. At one point, I accidentally put the system to sleep and when I woke it back up all the text was mangled blocks and indecipherable gibberish.

I attributed this it being an noveau bug and didn’t look into it since that machine wasnt going to keep that GPU after the testing was done but I wonder if these are related.

I believe this is the relevant issue:

I have run into the same issue. Most apps work happily, but built in Gnome stuff is horrendously broken. I try to run updates (hoping that soon an update will fix it) but it usually takes 2 or 3 times before I can get to view the updates and install them. I tried using the terminal app, but it too becomes garbled and unreadable. I can barely use the file browser (nautilus) or file-roller for managing zipped files. File pickers are also broken sometimes. I’m hoping that this can be resolved quickly, as it has begun to heavily hinder my work. I am also using a B580.

So only GNOME applications are affected after all?
Try if GSK_RENDERER changes anything, e.g GSK_RENDERER=cairo ptyxis ( no hw rendering) try also opengl and gl

see also GSK_RENDERER=help <program>
vulkan is the default renderer.

add line GSK_RENDERER=<renderer with best result> to file /etc/environment and restart.

It looks like doing GSK_RENDERED=gl has worked around the issue. I can’t tell what sort of performance impact this would have, or visual impact, but my display glitches appear, at a minimum, to not be as bad. I haven’t noticed them yet and have been running this for a bit.

I am happy to report that I’ve run it all day today with no visual glitches. I switched to gl mode for the GSK_RENDERER. It’d be nice to see everything able to use vulkan though…
