Secondary HDMI monitor will not use graphics acceleration when made primary

I have an MSI Bravo15 laptop with AMD graphics and processor on Fedora 35 using the Cinnamon desktop. Everything works fine unless I set my HDMI monitor as Primary in the Display settings. When I do all windows on the external HDMI monitor appear to lose hardware graphics acceleration. Alacritty gets several seconds of input lag while non accelerated terminals like Gnome terminal work fine. Steam, Brave and any other program that uses hardware acceleration for anything get either laggy or non-responsive. Moving those windows over to the build in laptop display makes them work normally as well as setting the laptop display back to Primary. Any ideas where I should start looking to figure out how to resolve this?

If your MSI is setup like my Alpha 15 (the internals on these models are near identical), I assume you have discrete graphics in addition to integrated. When you launch stuff in Gnome try right clicking on the icon and select “Launch with Discrete Graphics”. You can also launch apps with DRI_PRIME=1 from command line.

I dont have Gnome installed, just Cinnamon but the apps are launching fine and running correctly on the laptop display. They only have an issue if they are on the external display WITH the external display set to Primary. If the laptop display is Primary they launch and run correctly on both displays.

If the external is Primary I can launch and run the program no problem on the laptop display, but if I drag it to the external it loses acceleration. Likewise if I launch it on the external display it suffers lag and performance problems but I can drag it to the laptop display and it starts behaving correctly.

Another thing that might help is to check in your BIOS and see if you have an option to increase the memory allocated to the integrated video. If you’re not strapped for memory (which I assume you’re probably not on a Bravo), I would set this to max. There is a secret key combo on MSI laptops I don’t recall from memory that let’s you do all sorts of performance tweaks on it on boot, including overclocking. Of course, do this at your own risk and discretion, but an MSI Bravo should definitely not feel slow or sluggish on Fedora 35 - especially when running apps on that discrete rx GPU.
