I recently upgraded my Fedora system from version 38 to version 41, and I’m facing an issue where the search bar in all applications triggers randomly. This happens in the file manager, desktop, browser, and other areas, and it’s making it really hard to use the system. The search bar seems to pop up without any specific action, and I can’t do anything properly because of this.
I’m fairly new to Linux, and I’m not sure how to fix this issue. I’ve already checked to make sure that no keys are stuck, so I don’t believe this is a hardware problem. Has anyone experienced something similar or know how to resolve this?
That looks like an annoying issue for sure. The Activities Overview is launched by the Super key. I would make sure that there is no issue with this key (even though you’ve mentioned the keyboard should be fine).
These are a couple of suggestions:
Swap the keyboard with another one, if possible. That would tell if the issue is with the current keyboard. What kind of keyboard is it (integrated laptop keyboard, wired USB, Bluetooth etc)?
Create another user. If it doesn’t replicate, than we’d have to look at some local configs.
Supposed you’re using Wayland, does it happen if you log into GNOME with XOrg as well?
Install GNOME Tweaks, if not already installed, and temporarily swap Win key with another one (e.g. navigate to Keyboard → Additional Layout Options → Alt and Win behavior and check Left Alt is swapped with Left Win). Make sure the swap is working, and check if the issue still reproduces. If it doesn’t, then the Super key should be the issue.
