Screen tearing and touchpad not registering everything after reinstalling GNOME

Hi! This is my first post here, so let me know if I’m doing anything wrong.

I broke some things in GNOME and decided to reinstall. Everything worked, except now the screen tears, the cursor flickers, and the touchpad doesn’t respond to anything past basic cursor movement and scrolling - pinch to zoom, swiping between workspaces, swiping up to open the overview, all don’t work. The touchpad/cursor also feels slower, but that could just be my settings being reset

I don’t know if asahi drivers got removed in the process of reinstalling, but it feels like it. I don’t know how to check either

I’m using Fedora 39 and GNOME 45 (both before and after reinstall) on a Macbook Air M2

What I did:

  • Open terminal
  • sudo dnf update
  • sudo dnf remove @gnome-desktop
  • sudo dnf remove gnome-shell
  • Restart
  • Log into terminal only environment
  • sudo dnf install @gnome-desktop
  • Open terminal in GUI
  • sudo dnf install @gnome-desktop (for gnome desktop manager which didn’t install before)
  • Write this post

I haven’t got much saved on the asahi partition, so I can reinstall the entire OS if needed, but obviously I’d prefer not to if possible. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Those symptoms mean you are using the Xorg session, which is unsupported and broken. You need to use the Wayland session. You can select the session type at the login screen.
