Screen never turns off

I’m running the Cinnamon spin of Fedora 38. Just installed in a few days ago on a new computer running a very new CPU (16-core Intel)

I set my screens to turn off after 5 minutes of inactivity. They do technically turn off after 5 minutes, but only for about 1 second and then they turn back on. This repeats every 5 minutes while the system is idle.

I’ve tried rebooting. I’ve tried changing my power management settings. I’ve made sure all my packages are up-to-date. Nothing seems to work.

Is there any way I can see WHY the system thinks it’s not idle after that 5-minute time?

Here’s my system info:

Just a me too reply.
I’m using Fedora Workstation (GNOME) and the monitor doesn’t turn off also. Turns off for a moment then backlight turns back on and it’s just a black screen instead of being off.
I remember having the same behavior on Debian. I also remember finding an ancient unresolved bug report.
It might be the monitor as my laptop’s built-in screen turns off correctly.

Well, for me, I’ve used these exact screens with Linux Mint in the past (attached to a different computer), and the screens turned off correctly. So I don’t think it’s the screens themselves.

I’ve also confirmed that even from the F38 Cinnamon Live USB image, the same thing happens.

I’m now going to try the F38 Gnome Live USB image, and even an Linux Mint and Ubuntu image.

Unfortunately though helpful in many ways, that output from inxi does not assist in this case.

While your system is exibiting the noted behavior please run journalctl -b | tail -200 and paste the data here so one can see what is being logged. One may change the numerical value in that command to include enough data to see a full cycle of sleep (with lock screen) and wakeup.

Thanks for the suggestion. I tried what you asked and the data is at the end.

The screens turned off at roughly 13:48:50 ± 10s in my log, and then turned back on around 13:49:00.

All I see in that list is “blob data” which I’m guessing is from a podman container I’m running.

There seems something seriously wrong with a config somewhere.
There are about 170 entries of the blob data with the same exact time stamp
Jul 23 13:47:45
The sequence then repeats 2 minutes later.

I would guess that whatever that is could be related to the inability to sleep.

This also may be some effect of the switch with fedora 38 to enable auto-suspend by default when the system is idle for 15 minutes (idle defined as no keyboard or mouse activity)

All those “weather” blob entries are coming from a podman container that was running at the time. I can try it again without the container running (I know it’s reproducible without the container running).

I just reproduced it again without the container running, and journalctl -b | tail -200 show zero entries during the 5 minute period which included the screen timeout, and the screens turning off and back on.

Interesting enough, something funny happened the first time I tried to reproduce this.

My motherboard has 2 video outputs: 1 HDMI and 1 DP. Since the screens don’t shut themselves off anymore, I use a remote control that came with the screens to shut them off when I leave my computer. Occasionally, when I try to turn the screens back on, only one of them gets a signal from the computer. The other one is marked as disabled in the “display” control panel. If I manually enable it, then the screen comes back on and everything goes back to normal.

But, I tried waiting 5 minutes when just the CP monitor had a signal, and the screen did correctly turn off after 5 minutes.

So, this may only be a problem when both screens are enabled.

Make sure signal cables are properly plugged in and test different cables - in both cases displays may work but with some issues.

Thank you for the suggestion ozeszty. I tried using the exact same cables and monitors with a different computer (a Dell laptop running Windows 11). It was able to turn off both screens without trouble.

I also tried a different HDMI cable. It has the same problem with my Fedora 38 system.

So, it does not appear to be a problem with the cables, or with the monitors themselves.

It can’t be a problem with my software configuration, because the same thing happens when I run the Fedora Cinnamon Live CD.

This must be a problem with Fedora (or a hardware/firmware problem I suppose).

I’ve determined that it’s not limited to the screen saver / timed power management. If I run xset dpms force standby, the screens only turn off for a few seconds; and then they turn back on.

I even tried repeatedly running xset q once per second and logging the output while I ran xset dpms force standby in a different terminal window.

It says: Monitor is On, and then it transitions to Monitor is in Standby for 13 seconds, and then it goes back to Monitor is On.

On top of all of this, sometimes when it recovers from standby, it “forgets” about one of the screens.

And by “forgets”, I mean that one of the screens does not turn back on. It just stays off. If I go in to the display control panel, I see that the screen is disabled. I can re-enable it manually and then it turns back on.

There is something funny going on with power management here.

Any more ideas of how to debug this?

Look at PM related kernel parameters for your CPU/GPU and check available bios settings.

Can you give any suggestions on how to look at “PM related kernel parameters”? I’m a fairly technical person who has been running Linux for years, but I’m no Linux expert and don’t even really know where to start on that.

I took a quick look at my bios settings, and I don’t see anything relevant.

@endlisnis Hey There I have a question, Since it has been a while and it does not appear you have fixed the issue, can you tell me if you have Upgraded from Fedora 37 > Fedora 38 and are currently on Fedora 39?
Also, have you considered doing a fresh reinstall of the OS using Fedora Workstation Gnome to see if the problem persist? Have you installed all the latest firmware updates from Intel or Asus?

I upgraded to F39. Still can reproduce.

I upgraded my bios just now. I can still reproduce.

I will try running a live USB image of Fedora Workstation so I don’t have to muck around with my installed Linux.

Thanks for the info, My question was geared towards the possibility of the issue carrying over from a previous install somehow, since you upgraded that is still on the table. Which leads us to the next response, which should bring in some favorable results, hopefully :

If this brings back favorable results, I would strongly recommend a full reinstall of the OS. Since you’ve done your diligence on all the Powewr management tools etc already, it only leaves us at that point. :crossed_fingers:t5:

I tried a live USB image of F39 Workstation. I was unable to reproduce the problem.

My original install was F38 Cinnamon Spin. I wonder if it has something to do with Cinnamon, or whether it was the upgrade. Anyway. Now that I’m armed with that extra knowledge, I’m going to try a full OS reinstall.

Thanks for your efforts.

My gut say’s it’s a Cinnamon issue. I was tiptoeing the response because without proper data to point to it, it’s all a hunch. That was my gut feeling from the point when I picked to read this thread.

I’d say file a bug with Cinnamon, but without logs that can effectively point to it, it would be hard for them to reproduce too. . .

I’ve been an avid user of Linux Mint for many years, and until recently, I found it to be excellent quality.

Unfortunately, over the past 2 years, I’ve noticed several annoying bugs show up, for which they seem to be ignoring bug reports.

(1) Keyboard repeat settings are not restored after a USB keyboard is removed/replaced.
(2) Keyboard mouse settings are not restored after keyboard plugged in.
(3) This power issue.
(4) Lots of upgrade issues having to do with programs that can’t be removed after an upgrade.

The (1) issue, I raised a bug for it 18 months ago ( Keyboard repeat settings ignored when USB keyboard attached · Issue #11198 · linuxmint/cinnamon · GitHub ), and even though several other people have said “me too”, I’ve had zero response on it. This is one of the reasons I’ve been running Fedora lately.
