Doesn’t occur on KDE, so I presume this is purely a Gnome issue.
KDE has a power management setting to control this:
I would assume Gnome has the same, somewhere. Have you had a poke around in the power management aspect of Gnome? Apologies for not being more precise - I’m not a Gnome user so I don’t know what is available to you on that DE.
