Samsung Odyssey OLED G80SH remains black after display power-off/wake at 240Hz with KDE Plasma Wayland

Issue:

Multi Monitor system A: [2560x1440@144Hz], B: [3840x2160@240Hz], C: [3840x2160@144Hz] all connected via DisplayPort. Monitor B is: Samsung 32 Odyssey OLED G80SH, QD-OLED. Monitor B is brand new. My old configuration was A, C, A.

I dont sleep my computer if I step away, I just leave it and let the monitor turn off after 5 minutes (via the KDE power management setting). After the monitors have been off for 5 minutes and the PC wakes the monitors back up [1], B remains “active/connected” but renders nothing (just a black screen). I can login and see my desktop on monitors A, C. The KDE desktop still “sees” monitor B but still doesn’t render anything.

[1]: When I move my mouse to wake my PC I hear the connect / disconnect device sound play.

This happens when the monitor is set to run on 119Hz as well as 240Hz.

Workarounds:

  • Right click desktop and go to Display Configuration (or find it in KDE System Settings)
    • Click on monitor B in the arrangement view
    • Change refresh rate from 240Hz → 119Hz
    • Click Apply
    • Monitor B turns back on
    • The `Keep display configuration` dialog will display, click Revert (to go back to 240Hz)
    • Monitor B still on
    • Good to go until monitor turns off via settings again.
  • Restarting / Shutdown PC
