Samsung monitor turns on and off erratically on Fedora Workstation but works properly on Fedora KDE Plasma

Hello fedora friends!

I installed Fedora Workstation on my desktop PC a couple days ago and I am having some issues with my main monitor.

Here is my hardware info from Gnome Settings.

System Details Report

Hardware Information:

  • Hardware Model: Gigabyte Technology Co., Ltd. A520I AC
  • Memory: 32.0 GiB
  • Processor: AMD Ryzen™ 7 5800X3D × 16
  • Graphics: AMD Radeon™ RX 7800 XT
  • Disk Capacity: 2.0 TB

Software Information:

  • Firmware Version: F17
  • OS Name: Fedora Linux 43 (Workstation Edition)
  • OS Build: (null)
  • OS Type: 64-bit
  • GNOME Version: 49
  • Windowing System: Wayland
  • Kernel Version: Linux 6.17.7-300.fc43.x86_64

Primary Monitor Info

  • Samsung G85SB / Odyssey OLED G8 34"
  • Model Code: LS34BG850SLXZP
  • 3400 x 1440 @ 175Hz
  • Connected with DisplayPort 1.4
  • HDR
  • FreeSync (48-175Hz)
  • Firmware: 1664.4 (Up To Date)

Secondary Monitor Info

  • Acer KA272
  • 1920 x 1080 @ 75Hz
  • Connected with HDMI
  • FreeSync (Not available through HDMI on Linux right?)

The main issue I am experiencing, is that when my secondary monitor is plugged in, my primary monitor will go black or show some sort of sceen saver effect for about 2 seconds then turn back on for 2-20 seconds before going black again. This repeats indefinitely. The screen saver is one I have not seen before. It is different from the usual one that comes with the monitor software.

If my secondary monitor is disconnected the primary monitor runs just fine at 175Hz. However the diplay info on my monitor shows that VRR/FreeSync is not active, even though it is turned on in the onboard monitor settings. The Variable Refresh Rate option in Gnome Settings is not visible.

I can make the main issue go away by turning off VRR / FreeSync in the monitor settings which sadly caps the refresh rate to 120Hz in the onboard monitor settings. HDR on or off seems to not change anything.

At this point I thought there might be something related to my primary monitor’s EDID or the driver. But then I booted a Fedora KDE Plasma Live USB. In KDE the primary screen works as expected. In the KDE settings the “Adaptive Sync” option is visible and works when enabled. The display info on my monitor also confirms that FreeSync is active.

Is this maybe related to Gnome / Mutter?

I would prefer to stay on Fedora Workstation since I really like Gnome. I play video games on this machine so running my screen at 175Hz with FreeSync, while also having access to my secondary monitor would be very nice. I would much appreciate help with figuring out what is going on / fixing this. I haven’t run Linux in many years and this is my first time on Fedora. Please let me know if there is any helpful info I can provide.

Hope ya’ll are having a good day!
