Reporting successful upgrade 42 -> 44 (xorg)

Posting a success story. I know some will want to upgrade soon, possibly this week-end. Questions are welcome while it’s fresh to my mind.

System is Asrock B550M Pro4 with 32GB RAM and Fedora 42 with cinnamon desktop. NVME SSD ext4 /boot and / with luks encryption.

Upgraded to F44 and tested essentials for me (wine, heroic game launcher, kodi, qemu, browsers, audio, monitor switching properly: tv, single monitor, dual monitors). Not a single problem so far whatsoever.

Removed wine and steam packages prior to upgrade and changed gdm for lightdm. Apparently x11 code was removed recently from gdm and I certainly don’t want wayland. Dnf at first complained about gufw and tartube but --allowerasing took care of it.

sudo dnf install slick-greeter
sudo systemctl disable gdm
sudo systemctl enable lightdm
sudo dnf remove steam wine
sudo dnf system-upgrade download --releasever=44 --allowerasing
sudo dnf offline reboot
sudo dnf install wine steam gufw --skip-unavailable
sudo dnf remove kernel*6.12.91* kernel*6.19.14-108*
sudo rm /etc/yum.repos.d/_copr\:copr.fedorainfracloud.org\:kwizart\:kernel-longterm-6.12.repo
sudo dnf copr enable kwizart/kernel-longterm-6.18
sudo dnf install kernel-longterm
sudo dnf clean all
sudo remove-retired-packages 42
sudo dnf repoquery --duplicates
sudo clean-rpm-gpg-pubkey
sudo symlinks -r /usr | grep dangling
sudo symlinks -r -d /usr
reboot

I skipped F43 entirely: too many issues reported and I was very skeptical towards F44 (xorg removed from gnome) but all in all, it was by far the smoothest upgrade ever performed since inception with F38! The fastest too!

I managed to workaround GDM in cinnamon-6.6.7-6
