Report on installing F44 on MacBook Air 2015 4GB

  • The command line install was smooth and easy

  • After installing I began using Firefox as usual with 3 tabs open and a couple small apps open. Same usage as always.

  • Firefox crashed, repeatedly

  • The Firefox was running out of memory.

  • Installed Fedora Budgie Spin, gaining about 600MB of available memory

  • Install was smooth

  • Fixed up the look of the desktop which was easy but took awhile.

  • Installed wifi drivers, opened the firewall for LocalSend

  • Found a way to change the desktop background which doesn’t work from the Budgie Control Center.

gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.background picture-uri file:////path-to-your-file

  • You enter the command and just drag and drop an image into the Konsole window
  • Everything is fine now. No this is not my daily driver.

Update 5/7/26

  • Unfortunately, after a time, Budgie would not awake from sleep. No idea what was causing this and I’m not going to investigate. I’d close the lid of the macbook air, the light would go off on the logo and opening or opening and waiting or opening and waiting and key press would not revive the poor guy.
  • So I’m back on F44 Gnome.
  • Something tells me I’m going to need a macbook air with more RAM though.

fedora budgie

I encountered the same bug regarding the background install glycin-thumbnailer
you should be able to change your background the normal way.

then I was having firefox crash issues in f43 so i ended up just switching currently using librewolf, waterfox is good and vivaldi if you want a chrome alternative.
