Remove startup and shutdown sounds in Fedora 44 Plasma KDE

Hello, could someone please tell me how I can turn off these sounds? I can’t find a way. I’ve attached a screenshot showing that they’re unchecked, but a short melody still plays when I turn my computer off.

Have you checked in “Accesibilidad” there are also some auio settings.

Solved! Turn off “bell” and apply. Thank you very much.

KDE shouldn’t just randomly play a bell sound, at least my systems don’t. If your system does that, I suggest you investigate if it is trying to signal an error instead of turning of the bell sound and thus masking the error.

Op mentioned that the system logoff sound was playing. Even switching off this specific option “cierre de session” (log off). Not changed it.

That you have to dig in different places to remove such options just shows that KDE is still not there where it should be.
Legacy issues from the days when there were more than two places to configure settings.

Yes, I read the same text and I understood that. Which is why I said that I have deactivated both the logon and logoff sounds on my systems and no sound is playing.

KDE may have its quirks, but in this case, I don’t agree with that. One place is where you can add sounds to certain events, like logon or logoff. The other is an accessibility setting, the “bell”, right above the “visual bell” option, if you require a visual instead of an auditory “bell” signal. If turning off the “bell” turned off the sound @salva313 was hearing, this indicates to me that the system was actually playing the “bell” sound for some reason, not the logon/logoff sound. That’s why I suggested to investigate why a “bell” is playing instead of masking the reason for the “bell” sound by simply deactivating “bells” in general. Because with the “bell” deactivated, it might no longer play in other places either, like the terminal, where you actually might want to have a “bell” play. (Note that I haven’t verified that with Konsole, it’s just a hypothesis.)

While that may be true for some things (though I couldn’t name any off the top of my head, KDE really has matured a lot), I disagree about the “bell”. It is an accessibility option, not an event sound, so it is in the correct place IMHO.

I hope you saw that the OP made the same, with the difference that they state that the logoff sound still was playing after the change they made in the settings.

Before we do continue with a battle of arguments, we probably should agree in what is different to the settings the OP is using.

  1. The mother tongue seams to be Spanish as the screenshots are.
  2. This is involving different labels in the settings of same options in a different language.
  3. With my comments I pointed out that it would be wrong, when trying to switch off system sounds, having to-do this in the accessibility settings, while the correct place would be the system settings.
  4. The Title of the topic states clearly that the objective was to remove the system sounds in especial the login and logoff sound.

As the OP reached his objectives to switch off the login & logoff sound, I was marking their answer as a solution.

It is the users first topic and I do believe we are not in the position to decide if the user is able to make further investigations. That is why I would expect, that some KDE users chime in and help to find out what went wrong.

First I would like to know what the exact specification/version of the OP’s system is and if we can replicate the issue in the default language. This way we might can find out what went wrong and also eliminate this quirk while F45 is a prerelease.

As my daily driver is not the KDE Desktop I will move it into the Workstation/KDE discussion. This way they also get an idea of what we are doing and talking in the Ask section.

Additional comment:

I unfortunately observe that there are topics in which we not really focus on the Users request. The discussions often get off topic because we try to convince each others that the way we do something is the “best/right” way to do it, while forgetting to motivate new users to welcoming them and try to involving them into the Fedora Project.

This is not just making simple requests difficult to read, it also is demotivating users to help us to report issues upstream and focus on eliminating errors, to make Fedora better as it already is.

I do disagree that we agree. In my opinion it is a flavor of sound setting. If i not want a ding nor a dong nor a cow bell … I just like it quiet and silence, like none.

Accessibility option would be a extra loud Ding or Dong or cow bell, or a moving and blinking cursor beside a louder audio signal

I am not going to continue the debate who is right or wrong, as that was not my intention in the first place.

I saw that the thread was marked as having a solution, I only wanted to point out that the “solution” might not actually be addressing the root cause, even though it achieved the goal (=silence), and that it might have unintended consequences (no bell at all). If that is fine for the original author, I am not in a position to disagree. But to determine that, I feel it’s beneficial to have all the facts, including unintentional consequences.

I am sorry that you feel that way about my post. My motivation is that I want to understand system behavior and root causes, so we can address them properly (whatever that may mean, including a bug report, if there is really a bug in deactivating these sounds). In this case, I am not convinced that deactivating the bell addresses the root cause. You clearly feel differently and have accepted a solution. It’s not my issue, it’s not my system, I gave my feedback and I will shut up now.

This post is not related to Fedora Workstation, and certainly not related to Workstation Working Group. Could you remove the workstation-wg tag please? We don’t all need to be CCed on a KDE issue!

Removed @catanzaro

I’m having exactly the same issue here. I configured like on those screenshots, on the notifications, it was already disabled both login/logoff, I disabled the system bell, and it’s still playing the login/logoff sounds. Perhaps a bug?
