Regarding maliit-keyboard on Fedora 42/43

We have gotten bug reports about maliit-keyboard crashing constantly on people’s systems. Some people seem to attribute this to a recent Qt 6.10 update, but this issue has been happening for a while, even moreso nowadays.

For those having issues with that, feel free to either disable the virtual keyboard, or install the new upstream keyboard by installing the `plasma-keyboard` package, and switch to it under the System Settings app.

Do note that that new keyboard is also the new default under Fedora 44 and up.

It is the default for Plasma 6.6 and up across all Fedora releases that receive the update, specifically because of the issues with maliit.

I’ve been trying to switch my virtual keyboard off for a few days now. Gets reset back to Plasma Keyboard as soon as you leave and re-enter the Keyboard dialog page.

I had thought it was on reboot… nope - you just need to navigate away and back to reset it back to Plasma.

I have no need for a VK but I can’t get rid of it. I know there’s a bug already raised; has been since 2024.

Hi there, thank you for the heads up.
I’ve been using f43 kde and the only drawback to the default user experience was abrt nagging about the maliit keyboard crash basically at every boot.
I’m on a thinkpad t490 so a pretty basic laptop regarding support. I know this has been fixed for the next fedora release, but just to give a feedback, what worked for me was to choose the default ‘IBus wayland’ as a virtual keyboard instead of maliit as the former didn’t crash. But I guess on-screen keyboard doesn’t work anyway like unless we’re on a device that doesn’t have a keyboard?
Also choosing ‘none’ as an option for the virtual keyboard wouldn’t work either as it would reset to some other option.
Now I’ve replaced maliit for plasma-keyboard but I still don’t see a way to open a virtual-keyboard, not even on the new login manager. Not that I need it actually as my keyboard is working fine.

Yes that is a bug upstream about it.

Same here (F43, KDE with a ThinkPad T470s).

Disabling the virtual keyboard does not work, it always switches itself on again.

It used to be the Malit keyboard that crashes, but a “recent” update (not sure when) changed that and now it’s always the Plasma keyboard.
