Recommended M1/M2 portable

Hi.

I’m looking for upgrade to my laptop and started considering Apple’s M1/M2 Pro or Air portable in order to install Asahi Fedora immediately. I explored internet resources (including Asahi related discussions here, also Asahi wiki) to look for best supported Apple silicon based portable. Unfortunately that didn’t help me to make my choice, so I’m here asking you for recommendation - which M1/M2 MacBook Pro or Air are best supported by Asahi Fedora Linux? My priorities:

Priority 1:

  • Touchpad
  • WiFi&Bluetooth
  • Webcam
  • Audio:
    ** Computer speakers
    ** USB headsets with mic OR 3.5mm jack
    OR
    ** Bluetooth audio (optional/plan B if USB audio is not ready)

Priority 2:

  • External displays (HDMI)
  • Docking stations (TB)
  • KVM/QEMU support for Windows guests

Could you please recommend which M1/M2 MacBook Pro/Air is best supported according listed priorities ?

Support is basically the same for all models. The only thing that comes to mind is that we will likely add support for the built-in HDMI port on 14" and 16" machines before we support DisplayPort Alt Mode over Type C for all machines, so if you care about external displays, you might want to get one of those.

Other than that, just choose whatever machine has the specs you want. I recommend the M2 Air if you want something lighter with long battery life, or the 14" M1 or M2 Pro if you need more performance.
