Rapid Photo Downloader

I am a photo enthusiast and for maintaining my photo library Rapid Photo Downloader is an important part of my work flow.

The thing is after upgrading to F43 the application is no longer available. I find a version for F42, but it does not install. I also find a version for F43, but it is not public, it does not install and it does work.

I have tried to communicate with the maintainer of the application, but so far without any response.

Anyone out there having an idea of the process with or development of this application? Is it something for bugzilla?

Truls

Yes it is not available anymore on F43

It got retired:

That means not officially supported by Fedora anymore.

Try to download the tarball and see if you can install with the instructions described in the tarball:

Thank you for responding.

I may try the tarball way, but I think it is outside what I am able to to.

I see someone have tried to work on a F43 version; https://bodhi.fedoraproject.org/updates/?packages=rapid-photo-downloader

But it does not work.

Truls

sudo dnf upgrade --refresh --advisory=FEDORA-2025-30cae768bf

I think that is when you had it installed on F42 and upgraded … so it should update to the new version too?"
However the main problem is that it is not visible as F43 package anymore?!

Yes, that’s what happens when a package is “retired” - it is removed from the repositories.

In this case, the package was “retired” because no-one stepped up to become the package maintainer for more than 6 weeks after the package lost its previous maintainer. It doesn’t look as if it would be too hard to add it back, but somebody would need to step up and do that.

Well, unfortunately I have never written a line of code in my life else I would have tried to do the job here.

Surely, I will find a way around not having Rapid Photo Downloads available but so far I have not located any application for Linux with the same flexibility for renaming and back up.

I will wait a while and see if someone takes on the challenge.

Here’s a build for F42+ that works for me:
Package rapid-photo-downloader in vgaetera/extras

This includes the dependencies retired in F43:

Thanks, I will go there to install the app.

You saved me.

Thank, this installs fine. I will test it as soon as I am back home in a few days.

Do you have any plans to make an upgrade to the latest version. I see that 0.9.36 is available from the homepage, https://damonlynch.net/rapid/download.html

I was also able to install from vgaetera/extras, thank you so much for this. I had tried building it from source but failed.

Hi,

one of your packages conflicts with @System.

I enclose a screenshot.

You should disable the testing repo, it’s only purpose was to test the new build.
Assuming that it works, I’m going to update the app in the extras repo.

Thanks, I will do that.

I experience a problem after installing the latest version of Rapid Photo Downloader. Please see the enclosed screenshot and the bug report.

Sorry, the system did not accept the bug report. Its a *.tar.gz file.

The screenshots explain how and where to report the issues.

Note that GitHub allows attaching logs and archives:

As a workaround, you can downgrade to an older version:

sudo dnf downgrade rapid-photo-downloader --refresh

Thanks, I saw that, but thought this version was different from the official one. Your version number is different from the one they have.

But I will report as instructed.

Thanks again a happy new year.
