Question about my topic being moved to The Water Cooler

Hi! My topic about btrfs-patrol, a snapshot and rollback tool I made for Fedora, was moved from Ask Fedora to The Water Cooler and retagged tech-talk:

No problem at all. I’m new here and I picked Ask Fedora by mistake. I just want to do it right next time: is The Water Cooler with tech-talk the right place to share a community project like this? And would it be OK to add btrfs as a tag, so people interested in btrfs can find it?

Thanks for keeping the forum tidy!

Welcome to Fedora @jccl1706

The Ask section is to ask a question to find a solution. However you introduced a tool. So it is not really ask related.

This way your introduction for the tool has to be moved there. As the tags are restricted in this section you just take the next best.

You could also have said something about your selves, and put the tag introductions.

Please have also a look about the moderation rules which you find in every category linked.

I think @ilikelinux 's view is too strict.

1.) introducing a tool requires some audience, but The Water Cooler is a dumpster where we move everything that is bs or isn’t easy to categorize
2.) user is explicitly asking for feedback —> Ask Fedora

For the current thread I would suggest “Project Discussion” → engineering tag.

It is Fedora-specific, and technical enough for that.

But generally if someoone needs Fedora user feedback on the idea, the most direct way for that is to publish the Fedora Magazine article. It talks to the Fedora user audience about Fedora-related topics and it is better suited for feedback questions than the Ask category.

The Water Cooler is a good area for it, it is where people introduce themselves and talk about stuff that is not a question. It is not a dumpster.

As The Water Cooler gets less posts, the visibility is higher there than in Ask Fedora.

If your project is really focussed on Fedora, and if the quality is high, then as Aleksandra said, it could also go in the Project Discussion area.

Welcome to Fedora! Don’t forget to post an introduction in the Dumpster! And you can also check out the working groups on our Matrix chats.

I think this is also not the best. When you want to discuss change requests in the future again, with engineers and developers, we do have to respect their space.

I also believe that the Moderator which moved it into the water cooler made @jccl1706 a flavor. When someone creates an account exactly on the day when we do release the beta version, and they are not in a group, it is difficult for us to guess the intentions.

This way, when in the Watercooler we do have time to know the user better, and as @theprogram mentioned, in the water cooler topics are longer “fresh”. An engineer and or a developer will read your topic as soon as he has time and wants just to know what else is going on in the Fedora universe. I guess with where it is now, you have a very good chance to get seen.

If you believe that you need your tool seen in a wider audience, you could try to make an article in the Fedora Magazine. There you have audience the whole year. This way you would also get into a group and users which have to deal wit your topics might respect you faster as an dedicated Fedora user?! (I hope this proposal is not to extreme for @augenauf  )

Thanks everyone — this got a more thoughtful discussion than my question deserved.

To close it off: the topic has been moved to Project Discussion with the engineering tag, which is where @bookwar and MatH suggested it belonged, and computersavvy did the move. It has had a good technical discussion there since, including someone catching a real gap in what I had tested.

I also take @ilikelinux’s point about a brand-new account posting a tool on day one. That is a fair thing for moderators to be careful about, and The Water Cooler is a reasonable place for something to sit while people work out who you are. No complaint from me about the original move — I mainly wanted to understand the conventions rather than argue with them, and now I do.

Several of you mentioned Fedora Magazine for reaching a wider audience. I will look into that once the tool has a bit more mileage behind it and I am confident it holds up on other people’s machines, not just mine.

Thanks again for the welcome.

Happy that you recognized that I try to think out of the box.

There are other water cooler topics in which you could write some lines, so we can see from where you came to fedora (and mention your tool) :
