Pulling my hair out. Chrome installed, randomly doesnt open

I think the root of your issue here is also the issue you’re having with your Nvidia hardware/drivers/secureboot (NVIDIA signing from third party & opengl - #5 by paulkjac)

yeah, well this is where im confused… if i install nvidia from gnome, a prompt comes up witht the code for that mok signing.. which i do, but… on the nvidida app it doesnt show my card…

if i install nvida from terminal, and do the mok signing, the nvidia app shows the card… but then i have that playing video & chrome problem..

Do you think it’s possible to install without secure boot then sign it after? Then re enable secure boot?

Thanks for the help by the way

I haven’t actually done the secure boot signing bit myself, so I’m not too sure about how that works. I generally prefer to use the RPM Fusion documentation and command line tools just so that I know exactly what’s going on. I have nvidia on my machine and didn’t need to tinker with secure boot (but it was so long ago that I can’t remember what I did—I didn’t do any signing, though)

The RPM Fusion secure boot page says:

"
With Fedora 36+, the akmods package have support to automatically sign locally built kmod with a self generated key. Such key must be imported into the EFI firmware (you must have write to access the EFI firmware).

It’s not required to disable secure boot (not even move to BIOS compatibility).
"

I think the thing to do here is to separate the two issues:

  • get your nvidia correctly set up

then, once that is confirmed

  • debug whats happening with chrome and other apps

HIya, done some more playing around, not sure if you have a thought on this, i installed something called - plasma (x11) and when i run that. all my problems have gone. works perfectly.. can even run my video editing software which i couldnt before…

whats your thoughts on that??

Not a lot to be honest. Still too many moving parts here to be able to pin point what is/was wrong.

If X11 worked, then this could be an X11 vs Wayland issue. From what I know, Wayland should run fine on Nvidia too now (see this change for Gnome, for example: Changes/WaylandOnlyGNOME - Fedora Project Wiki ) but that may not be the case for all desktops/systems/applications.

If this works, that’s great.

thanks ill take a look, yeah ive been running rocky for the last 2 years… which i think is wayland… not had any problems at all - so i thought fedora would be similar

nah no luck.. :frowning: i think ill have to give up on this one, and look to moving to another linux… thanks for all the help anwyays

Understandable. Your posts have enough detail to be found by others with the same issue, so may eventually lead to a solution. If this was a common issue there would have been “me too” posts already and web search would find similar crash reports.

Is this a home-brew system? If so there may be very few similar systems, and would explain lack of “me-too” posts.

yeah hopefully someone might shed a light on it… nah its jsut funny as everything works perfectly on rocky, & mint too… not problems what so ever…

i just wanted something more like fedora thats all - theres jsut something that doesn’t play well and im not experienced enough to figure it out

I have the same issue on Fedora 42. Here are my details:

Is this from a time that it failed?

I ran this command while Chrome was already running, and a new window opened successfully. The following is the output when the command failed to open a window without the Chrome running:

Only Google really understands how chrome works, but Linux relies on the fact that “given enough eye, all bugs are shallow”. I see another user appears to have the same issue. You check that post for hardware in common and maybe allow others to reproduce the issue.

You said earlier in this thread that you solved the problem by installing ‘plasma (x11)’. is that still working for you?

I’m curious where/how you decided to try installing plasma.

if installing plasma does fix chrome for you, then I’m wondering if you have the plasma-integration extension added to chrome. you could try removing that extension. and if you’re using GNOME (and not KDE) then you don’t need the plasma-integration extension (I don’t think, anyway).

right… well im now having the same problem on my rocky Linux install fresh install now.. didnt have a single problem for the last few years, jsut after htis fresh install… ive gone back a couple versions on my bios… same problem..

which leads me to believe its something to do with the graphics card, but i think maybe the drivers… as i can use it perfectly fine when i test on windows…

well i just done a google search… as i now suspect my nvivida is the culprit.. well the drivers or something… as my rocky linux install is playting up now after a fresh install… and thats been solid for years…

i read someonw was having problems with wayland and NVIDIA and suggsted x11 - so i installed it… problem gone… but i really dont like it…

playign videos - theres loads of people complaining about that opengl on the gnome software reviews sasying - You need to set GDK_GL=gles in ~/.config/environment.d/gdk.conf for GL to work.

im trying to figuire out what that means… that i think, i think… its all working

with regards to videos never playing… anything ’ fedora’ in the gnome software doesnt work… if i remove them and install the same version but the flathub one… all works fine
