Problems with upgrade to f44 and nvidia GTX 970M

Hi I have the same issue with my GTX 970M. After I updated to 44 my laptop has issue with NVIDIA Kernel module missing. I have try all steps:

1. Unistall drivers
2. REstart
3. Install 580 nvidia driver
4. Rebuild akmod and without it but waiting after installation ~ 20min
5. Restart and still have issue with Missing module

I have checked my system and before installing drivers I have:

And after I install and restart second graphic card goes away, and sometimes when I click Information center at the top I have in second graphic card NV124.
I have tried multiple things but still nvidia-smi is not detecting my card. Is there a way to solve this issue?

I also suggest that you provide details about what you have done.

1. an upgrade from f43 to f44 will automatically upgrade the nvidia driver from the 580 version to the 595 version that does not support your GPU.
2. after the upgrade you would need to remove the 595 drivers sudo dnf remove \*nvidia\* --exclude nvidia-gpu-firmware. If you have already removed the nvidia-gpu-firmware package you should reinstall it using dnf.
3. reinstalling the 580 drivers requires that you have the rpmfusion-nonfree repo enabled. You can see if that is already installed with dnf repolist and if not follow the instructions here to enable it.
4. Once that repo is enabled then install the (now legacy) 580 drivers with sudo dnf install akmod-nvidia-580xx xorg-x11-drv-nvidia-580xx-cuda

Thank you for splitting topic. In general I upgraded from f43 to f44 and upon finding than my Nvidia is not working I followed many guides to remove 595 and install 580 but non of the guides solved my issue. I also disabled Nvidia repo and leave only nonfree

If I understand this you disabled the rpmfusion-nonfree-nvidia-driver repo and left the rpmfusion-nonfree repo. If this is not correct please restate that with the full repo names.

Also, it is helpful if you replace many guides with the details of exactly what guides were used so we might assist in identifying which ones may have been misleading in content.

It is very difficult for us to provide detailed and accurate suggestions when you post only information such as In general I upgraded from f43 to f44 with no details whatsoever.

My detailed suggestions above are what works for (estimated) more than 99% of users.

1. Yes I disabled nonfree-nvidia and enabled nonfree like you mentioned
2. Sorry short description what I followed I provided in first post:

sudo dnf remove akmod-nvidia xorg-x11-drv-nvidia*
sudo dnf install akmod-nvidia-580xx
sudo akmods --force --rebuild
sudo reboot

But this always result in NVIDIA Kernel module missing upon booting.

That command doesn’t remove the 595 versions of nvidia-persistenced, and especially nvidia-modprobe. The mismatched nvidia-modprobe could well be implicated in the failure of the driver to load.

On a clean system, when installing the akmod-nvidia-580xx package it also installs the nvidia-modprobe and nvidia-persistenced with the 595 version. There appears to be no 580xx version of those packages so it is expected that they will be the 595 version.

Please run sudo akmods --rebuild --force then after that completes reboot.
Once the reboot completes provide lsmod | grep -E "nvidia|nouveau" and modinfo -l nvidia as well as sudo dmesg | grep -iE "nouveau|nvidia|secure"

It is puzzling that the nvidia gpu did not show up in the lspci output. Is it possibly disabled in bios? If so that could account for all the issues.

The bios seems to be at the latest version available from MSI, and that is 8 years old so it is possible the bios can be a factor with the newer kernels.

Also like I mentioned in first post, when Nvidia driver is deleted I can see that Fedora is detecting correctly Nvidia card in the system info, after installation of the driver it is like below:

It’s weird that you seem to have the open-kernel flavour of the drivers - those only support 1600/2000 series and later cards. The akmod-nvidia-580xx package should identify the right flavour at install time.

What’s the output of: modinfo -l nvidia ?

This is definitely a problem. The open-kernel drivers won’t support your card.

You can try this, to bypass the auto-detection and force the installation of the closed-kernel drivers:

echo "%_with_kmod_nvidia_open 1" | sudo tee -a /etc/rpm/macros.nvidia-kmod
sudo akmods --rebuild --force

Then check modinfo -l nvidia again, and hopefully you’ll have the closed-kernel drivers.

Yes, and I wonder if this is related. Your card maybe doesn’t show its model number in a way that the installer understands.
