Printer disappeared after KDE 43 update

Brother MFC-J497DW printer, connected through USB cable, suddenly is no longer installed. LSUSB shows connection, CUPS has no driver. Reinstall from Brother but still doesn’t show up.

What to do?

Went back to Brother USA support site and re-downloaded their driver, gunzipped as directed, and re-installed under sudo. At this point I had an entry for a printer but it still would not produce output until I opted for “IPP Everywhere” in lieu of a driver.

Under System Settings / Printers I have one entry for a printer; in Okular I see two. In XSane there are three scanner options, two of which produce an error and one of which works.

Seems to me this is an area where a little more attention from the maintainers would be beneficial.

The “maintainers” with best chances of having the necessary hardware to test are the vendors’ developers. Many companies have been losing experienced devs due to age or offers of higher pay with stock options to work on AI, so support for linux users who have already purchased hardware becomes low priority. The exception might be enterprise grade printers vendors hope to sell into cubicle farms.
