Preferences in Nautilus (gnome-files)

Was there a compelling reason to have these two, distinct ui to change how Files work:

and

why aren’t grid settings and list settings in the same preferences screen?

(this question is a reminder to myself to look at various (and occasionally illogical) places when trying to use gnome software)

Can you please give us the path to the first Picture? Is this in the settings too? Where?

I just can guess that the fact that you can sett the first settings just for one Folder is, distinguishing between per folder or system wide setting. While the second one is for the grids in general (system wide)?!

When in the list view Visible Columns is available as a menu selection from the view options menu.
The grid view menu is part of the Main Menu → Preferences ; Grid View Captions

The HMI is not consistent between the two options.

@theking2 I’d suggest filing an upstream bug Making sure you're not a bot!

Thanks

I took me forever to find out.

One is on the hamburger menu under Preferences, the other is in right click on a well hidden secret place on the column headers.

Direct in the front of the first column (right click). Or clicking on the arrow down symbol in the header of Nautilus; visible columns, I found it now:

I also made the question in discourse of gnome:

Someone answered to the question why this two settings are on different places:

Hi, the correct answer probably is: it’s organically grown.
I could see the two views being merged if someone wants to implement it.

Is there commercially available replacement software for file management? I use Directory Opus on Microsoft Windows and don´t mind to hand out cache for a workable product.

If you allready want to spend money, why not fix nautilus? If you sponsor a Developer you do returning to the Opensource Community.

As it has been said. Linux and Nautilus in special had a long way till where we are now. So some adjustments would be needed to do.
