Please help with writing audio CD

Hello everyone

its been now 1 week and a half that i am trying and failing at getting k3b to write an audio disc
i reinstalled fedora 40 kde 3 times already from scratch, reinstalled k3b from terminal 3 times and from discover center 3 times and i managed to fix some errors but there is still one error that stands out. i read on different forums that i should set coredump to false but i am a newbie and i have no idea how to work around modifying sudo files, i will show you below all the errors that i am getting.
my setup is fedora 40 kde updated today to the latest updates, k3b installed today–my machine is a msi mobo b250m bazooka i5 7400 3.0 24gb ram adata msi radeon rx580 armor 4gb ddr5 and 4 hdd separately—external dell dvd+/-rw DW316 firmware A1C0

UPDATE: i was looking online how to use gnome cd master and somebody on youtube recommended the following and proved it on video that it works. i gave it a go and now i can write audio cds with k3b. this is the second best day of this year the first one being fedora 40 full install and working brilliantly. here are the codes:
sudo chmod 4711 /usr/bin/wodim
sudo chmod 4711 /usr/bin/cdrdao

i dony know what those commands are but i downloaded the linux command line book and i am really eager to learn

enjoy everybody

Have you made your user a member of the cdrom group (and possibly the video group)?

You cannot do anything with the cdrom unless you are a member of the group owning that device (/dev/sr0 on most systems)

The groups command should show a list of groups your user belongs to.
If you are not already a member of the cdrom group you can add yourself to the group with sudo usermod -a -G cdrom <username>. Following that a log out and login should allow access.

Hi Jeff

Thank you very much for replying
I added myself to the cdrom group and still have the same problem

Can you advise me another way?

thank you

more info is necessary.
With the dvd drive attached please post the output of inxi -Fzxx so we can see the hardware. Please use the preformatted text option (the </> button on the toolbar) when posting to retain on-screen formatting. (Paste the text then highlight it before clicking the button.)

Also, Did you log out and back in before trying the process the next time?
What is the result of the groups command?

For some time in the past I had problems with k3b but was forced to use brasero instead. However, since the release of f40 and a removal then reinstall of k3b those problems went away.

Just to verify that it is still working I used the F40 iso and with k3b wrote the image to a blank disk. I have no problems with k3b at this time so we need the additional information asked for to even start.

Hello Jeff

I really appreciate your help
sorry i was not next to my desktop for some time.
to answer your question, yes i did log out and then log back in and the same result came back
the result of the groups command is

teizeipei@fedora:~$ groups
teizeipei wheel cdrom nordvpn

i tried brasero before and had the same error which is very weird

thank you again for your time and help

I do not see the usb device in that inxi output.
Please (with the external dvd drive attached) show us the output of
lsusb and ls -l /dev/{cdrom,sr0}

teizeipei@fedora:~$ lsusb

here are the details
previous details that i posted were also with the connected usb dvdrw

thank you

The dvd drive shows up in the lsusb output. I did not realize usb devices were excluded from the inxi output until I rechecked on my own system.

To test if this is an issue with k3b or with the dvd drive I would like to do a read test from a disk in the dvd drive. Please put some disk that already has data into the drive then try copying that data with the dd command.
Something like dd if=/dev/sr0 of=filename.img bs=64M

Use a file name you choose for ‘filename.img’. The bs (block size) parameter is used to override the default 512 byte block size and speed up the process.
(it might be necessary to use sudo with the dd command but since you are in the cdrom group that should work as your regular user.)

If dd is able to copy the data from the drive that would narrow down the problem point to k3b and not the hardware.

teizeipei@fedora:~$ sudo dd if=/dev/sr0 of=f.img bs=64M
28+1 records in
28+1 records out
1890648064 bytes (1.9 GB, 1.8 GiB) copied, 302.867 s, 6.2 MB/s

hello

done
please let me know the next step

Now we know that the dvd drive works, and is readable.

The issue appears to be writing to the drive so now try writing the same image to a blank disk using k3b
Insert a blank disk then from the command line open k3b and select ‘tools’ → ‘burn image’ then select the image you just created to burn to the disk.

Using the command line to open k3b may provide more information about problems on screen if the burn of the image fails.

Hello Jeff

thank you for the advice
can you please write the command line on how to open k3b and then go to tools. i am a newbie with the terminal and this would be great help

thanks

on the terminal command line enter k3b
The rest is gui

can you please tell me what to do next

thank you

What are the file types of the audio tracks to be written?

The command shows them as /home/teizeipei/Videos/k3b_audio_0_01.inf and so on.

Note that audio CD uses a track format that differs from the track format used by data CD or DVD. Some burning backends may not be able to burn audio CD, for example xorrecord will not, but wodim should be able to.

Also refer to https://docs.kde.org/stable5/en/k3b/k3b/burning-an-audio-cd.html.
You can also search for “k3b audio cd” for more suggestions.

I don’t know if it works as I never burnt an audio CD, but have burnt many data CDs.

PS: Van you modify the tittle as this looks like an XY problem where the real problem is burning audio CDs.

there are 13 FLAC files and 1 mp3 file
i tried also with a wav file and is the same

do you think cdrecord can not write flac files?

thank you

Hello Villy

thank you very much for your input. i went to the link you provided and followed instructions on that page and still the same result. Since the late 90’s i am burning cds because i like to dj on windows and since the early 2000’s i developed the curiosity for Linux. it is an amazing new perspective from the point of view of programming, in the same time occasionally there are some things that you need to have a good experience with that distro or to know a good amount of code and command line to get things done. This is where i started learning through youtube and google searches is just this time i encountered this error that requires more technical details and knowledge that i can find and understand online, that’s why i joined the forum and i am very greatful to anybody that is willing to help me. This being said with audio cds there are a lot of formats and different ways to write them, in the early 2000s i used brasero and it worked fine, now i used brasero and k3b and i just can not write.

Thank you again for all your help

To find out if it may be the flac or mp3 codec that is the issue, when creating the project there is a button to convert the tracks. Using that you could possibly convert all the tracks to wave files before beginning to burn them. The default codec on audio cds is a raw wav file so if the codec may be the issue then converting them first may solve it.

Unfortunately, I cannot recreate your conditions since I quit using CDs many years ago. I no longer have any blank disks and k3b will not let me even create an image on my hard drive since an audio CD is different than a data cd. Brasero created an image but will not burn it since the DVD-R is not the same as an audio CD.

Since USB drives are common now, would it be possible to put your planned tracks onto a flash drive and use that for the playlist instead of the actual CDs?

Thank you very much Jeff for your help

I will put all my music on a usb and play it from there

Wishing you all the best and have a great day
