"Plasma Renderer" icon came up, but the PC seems to be using the GPU?

It’s been around 1 hour since I made this post and then left the PC to the family.
I got called in and they told me that “the icon is gone”.

I’d still like to know what happened?




LONG story short:
Nvidia.

I got this GT 1030 PC with Fedora KDE and proper Nvidia Drivers from RPM Fusion (specs below), updated drivers last week[1], then I spent the week testing PCs[2] with this one being completely off for maybe 2 days.
I plug the PC back in, literally this last our, and the “Plasma Renderer” icon is up (pic related).
tl;dr this icon comes up just and only, afaik, if the GPU ain’t GPUing right.

The PC seems to be using the GPU to render, at least, "graphics such as games’ ", so I have NO IDEA why this icon came up…

Since I can’t report anything else without further tests, and googling is as useless as always [3], and right now I can’t really stay on this PC for long, in the meantime I created this page so that someone may know what’s going on without just wasting time while I can’t work on it…

  1. Here I just made the PSA a couple days after the drivers failed to update properly, it wasn’t “immediately after”. P.S.A. about Nvidia Drivers (RPM Fusion) failing to update ↩︎

I don’t have that icon on my bar to look at.

It happears only when something fails.

If you press the Windows key you can search for that software.

Have a look in the user and system journals for errors.

Re: the time. Check that your BIOS clock is set to the correct time.
Usually UTC is best to use.

Try adding -g nvidia to the journalctl commands.
Also for the user journal try adding -g kwin.

-g is an option to the command. So you take the commands I suggest and add the option. FYI you can also see what other options journalctl support in the man pages: man journalctl. Journalctl is a well worth know a little about as its the tool you will use any time the system does odd things.

journalctl --user -b 0 -g kwin

This information only presents dates about today.

I don’t think these will be useful, since the problem was there just and only for that 1-2 hours when I made the post.

This says there is a bug in the NVIDIA driver.
Which will acount for the problem you see.

As the code is closed source all you can do is wait for an updated nvidia driver release.

But if you remember what you are doing just before this happens you may have a clue to help avoid the bug.

580.142 indeed has known issues (especially in the closed-source flavour). RPMFusion has rolled it back now, so the prior version is once again available in the repos.

Correct. The current (bug free) version that supports the 10xx series cards is 580.126.18

However the bug in the 580.142.1 version appears to only be triggered by installing on a system that has dual GPUs (mostly laptops) and for those who have only the nvidia gpu it is not an issue. I have it on one of my desktops with an RTX 3050 gpu and no problems.

It can’t really get fixed, it’s the last official drivers which will support my hardware.

Once Nouveau gets as good I’ll change to that.
