[PITCH] Butane to Ignition - how to automatically configure Fedora CoreOS

Following the recently written comprehensive article on Fedora CoreOS, I am proposing an article that goes into detail about how to configure CoreOS according to your specific needs.

This article will describe how to write a Butane file, and how to turn it into an Ignition file. More specifically, it will give the user an overview of how they should write a Butane file to fit certain needs so that they can easily configure their server. And, it will detail what parts of a Butane does, and how it will affect their system. It will also go over how to install CoreOS based on what is written in their butane file.

Sounds good. +1. :slightly_smiling_face:

@tffhrtp Is this this an update or elaboration to this article:
Run GitHub Actions on Fedora CoreOS - Fedora Magazine
Or does that article not cover what you propose?

I understand that the article I cited is aimed at GitHub but it does quite an explanation of the CoreOS part

I’ll give this a +1 and open a ticket. Just thought you might want to know of the other one.

See Card #280

@rlengland the article that I’m proposing will go into more detail, starting from ISO->fully operational, with a focus on a bare metal installation. I.e. if a user want to run their system from ram/pxe/on disk. And, how they will manage their system.

It might also be great to mention that it is possible to compile multiple butane files into a single ignition file. This is something I struggled with when starting with fedora coreos. Being able to split a large butane file into multiple reusable ones is important when your config starts to grow.

edit: whoops seems like I am replying to Justin but can’t change it. Should be a reply to the main topic.
