Overall slo-mo perfomance on gaming nvidia laptop under wayland

Two years ago, I experienced poor performance with Wayland, and the situation today remains the same. Games and even the standard GNOME interface run poorly under Wayland, with severe lag — around 5 to 15 FPS.

Because of this, I usually try to switch to an Xorg session without XWayland or similar layers. I’ve already edited /etc/gdm/custom.conf and installed several Xorg-related packages, but none of that brought any improvement.

I’m asking you, Fedora community, for a current and reliable way to force Xorg as the default session on Fedora 42 pre-release. Any help would be appreciated.

P.S. Just tried startx via tty and performance raised up dramatically as I expected

Did you install nvidia drivers?

If not, your system is using the opensource nouveau driver which may not perform well…

XOrg is in maintenance mode since 2019 and has no future - I would stop using it.

Maybe use a non-wayland spin instead of gnome, gnome has removed xorg sessions from GDM for F42.

Xorg still gets fixes and security fixes and does regular releases.
maintenance mode means it doesn’t get any new features, it is mature and feature complete unlike wayland.

Which ones? I didn’t try F42, but I installed all these on F41 GNOME 47 and WaylandEnable=false in /etc/gdm/custom.conf:

gnome-session-xsession xorg-x11-drivers setxkbmap xhost xmodmap xorg-x11-xauth xorg-x11-xinit xrdb

Edit: That apparently won’t work F42: https://old.reddit.com/r/Fedora/comments/1jv1fch/fedora_workstation_42_has_finally_removed_x11/

Wayland still can’t accelerate a 1000Hz mouse properly off inconsistent timings (GNOME)
