Occasional system and screen freezes, FEDORA 42

Wondering if anyone else is experiencing the same issues where

  1. Sometimes there is a complete system freeze (mouse and keyboard input is gone and resetting the usb connection doesn’t do anything, system wont even go to screen lock automatically and that is how I know it is frozen). The only thing I can do is reboot.

Now usually when something like this occurs it could indicate a memory issue and so I have ran through two consecutive tests of the memory with Memtest86 and there were no errors. I can only system a driver issue perhaps but not sure.

  1. I would be working and all of a sudden one of the monitors appears to go dead on me, either goes black or there is no refresh. I’ve seen people say this could be a Wayland issue and going CTRL+ALT+1 or CTRL+ALT+3 and then CTRL+ALT+2 fixes the issue but that doesn’t work at all for me. Also tried another suggestion to add amdgpu.dcdebugmask=0x10 to GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX and regenerate grub2 but that didn’t help.

For both of the above this is something I didn’t esperience with FEDORA 41.

In case this can help, my system is composed of :

  • 9800 X3D
  • Asrock X870
  • RX 7900 XTX

And yes in case people wonder, as I know there are issues with CPUs dying, I am on the latest 3.30 BIOS and I sometimes use my system on Windows 11 24H2 where I do not get any of those issues (Windows as other issues, well it being WINDOWS if you know what I mean  ).

Anyway, wonder if any of you have this issue and if there is anything I could try that could help fix this.

Thanks

There are likely to be clues in the system journal and user journal.
Have a look in both around the time that you see the issue.

How do you do the reboot? forced power off? Or something else?
If its a forced power off then you may loss the logs with error details.

Do you have another system that you can use to ssh into the hung machine?

FYI - I have a related GPU the RX 7800 XT that is working fine.
The 7800/7900 GPUs seem to usually be free of issues.

That may be becuase you where on an older kernel on f41.

@barryascott

It was a forced poweroff. I haven’t tried to ssh into the machine as it appear to be completely frozen but I could enable sshd on this machine and try and login.

And yes I agree, Fedora 41 was obviously on a much older kernel so there may still be bugs to be sorted out in Fedora 42 and newer kernels.

I did manage to find a few weird things in journalctl but nothing that would explain a system freeze or a window free or perhaps it is just me that doesn’t understand.

Although I doubt the the last part is causing these issues, not sure why I’m getting those grub warnings…

This problem happens to me as well but the trigger on my system coincides with browsing to websites like Amazon with tons of popup or rollover animations. I have had to seriously work on tweaking my browser settings and using a few extensions. I have also had to seriously curtail the eye candy as well due to suspend/Sleep/wake issues but I can run KDE quite nicely. In fact this 2014 Lenovo Idea Pad is running better than it ever did .

Quick peek:
Operating System: Fedora Linux 42
KDE Plasma Version: 6.4.3
KDE Frameworks Version: 6.16.0
Qt Version: 6.9.1
Kernel Version: 6.15.7-200.fc42.x86_64 (64-bit)
Graphics Platform: Wayland
Processors: 4 × AMD A8-6410 APU with AMD Radeon R5 Graphics
Memory: 16 GiB of RAM (14.6 GiB usable)
Graphics Processor: llvmpipe
Manufacturer: LENOVO
Product Name: 80E3
System Version: Lenovo G50-45

Originally came with Win8 preload, dual booted with fedora within 15 days. Blew away windows partition in a year and is pure fedora 42 with new SSD and RAM upgrade.

Sometimes it lets me into a virtual terminal but 99% of the time it is hard reboot. I know, new laptop time. Its just sad it took this long for this box to be so otherwise excellent.

Trigger for me is mostly when I program in Jetbrains Rider. I do have a couple of browsers open for documentation and other things I need to research while I code for possible a combination of many things.

There is something interesting that I see at times, my monitors will quickly flicker, not enough for the screens to go dark, and quick enough that it is very subtle.

I only have to force reboot when the system as a whole freeze with the keyboard not responding. When it is just my “screen” freezing, I can hop into a virtual session, go to the terminal and reboot. About 80% of the time I’m able to do so.

Just now I had the session close on me without me asking for it (that issue is new) and it seems to point to something Wayland / Plasma

Fedora 41 gets the same kernels as 42 does, at the same time.

So if it is kernel related issue then f41 would have done the same hang potentially.

It’s very likely that the journal logs that may explain the issue never male it to disk in that case.

Use ssh you can run journalctl -f to stream the logs as they are created.

Yeah I guess I’ll have to do that now that I enabled SSHD on this machine and wait until the issue occurs, hopefully that way I catch the issue live.

I did a little bit more research and seems I’m not the only one reporting these kind of issues on reddit with these being more frequent on Fedora 42.

Anyway I’ll wait and see if I can catch the issue live.

Alright I thought I would share this.. There are a few warnings when I start the system and a very big error that stand out and was wondering if anyone could have a look and tell me if they have any idea if these could cause serious issues.

Does the time of the errors match the time of a freeze?

Have you look at this file to see if it explains why mysql failed?

In this case I didn’t get a freeze no but I do see this error come up quite a bit.. Is it linked to the screen or system freeze, I have no clue.

here is the trace from mysql.err

That logs show a “normal shutdown “ but triggered by unknown.

Unless you see apps failing like kmail I would ignore this.

I am having the same issue. Its annoying me for a month now. I have tried wiping and reinstall workstation 42 again. It still freezes on me.

I have dual booted Windows and Fedora but never used windows until now. On windows, I tried using it for 2 days and its stable. Tried gaming for couple of hours to see if fans are a problem. But it handles it.

I want to try maybe other spin or a different OS altogether.

This could be a GNOME or graphical card issue. May I ask if you are using any GNOME extensions ?

If that was the case then he would also have issues under Windows. The fact is, I’m experience similar issues he does on my own system while under Windows I don’t get these system freeze or screen freeze issues.

I chose Fedora because it was updated more frequently but I guess that comes at the price of stability. I’ve configured my entire system to me able to do everything except gaming but, I may find myself in the same boat as you and look for another distro at this point. But I’m not quitting just yet. Fedora 43 is right around the corner and will wait and see. I hope I don’t have to change, I like Fedora and changing would mean a lot of work to prepare a new system again….

The hypothesis of GNOME third party extensions causing issues like freezing is not to be ruled out. It maybe worth checking the GNOME shell logs:

  • journalctl /usr/bin/gnome-shell
  • journalctl /usr/bin/gnome-session

I had similar issues in the past, and I was able to prevent the freezes by disabling all the third party GNOME extensions.

My issue happens and I’m under KDE. Also, R Shambles didn’t mention Gnome so it is very unsure if his situation could be related to Gnome.

I think I finally found what causes one of my monitors to freeze.. Interestingly enough this happens when I code with RIDER using the Avalonia plugin, I guess the rendering it needs to do causes the same issues some people have been experiencing when gaming.

Many people have been reporting this issue on github.freedesktop.org.

I tried to switch to another TTY and come back but it doesn’t work. The only solution is to reboot. I hope this will get fixed soon.

Mine freezes so much it’s become normal. I had to reboot twice in quick succession because it freezes up IMMEDIATELY after logging into KDE desktop.

I only get a CHANCE of a stable system for every boot.

Not that this post adds anything of value except for ‘me too.’ I’ve posted about my issue some time ago.
