You should be ok with the latest Nvidia drivers.
Have you checked for potential hardware related problems (like bios diagnoses, or other odd behavior)? Have you run dmesg (need to be root) to see if you have some potential problems?
The only thing I can recommend is remove all Nvidia related drivers, start all over again and follow the rpmfusion.org howto for Nvidia.
For removing all the current installed nvidia drivers use rpm -qa | grep nvidia to list them and dnf remove <pkg> to remove them. Rinse and repeat until they are all gone.
Also before you reboot the system I would recommend to first drop into console mode systemctl set-default multi-user.target, although it shouldn’t be necessary it can help to avoid potential graphics interference.
Now reboot and login as root. Start installing the nvidia drivers and wait for the akmod build to finish (just use top to see what it’s doing…). Reboot again and check for activity, the reason is that I sometimes have seen akmod build kick in after first reboot. Anyway if all is quiet try to run the nvidia-smi.
If all look okay (or not…) then re-enable the normal login systemctl set-default graphical.target and reboot again.
Obviously you need to be root for the systemctl ... and dnf remove ... commands.
Last, I would also highly recommend to disable secure boot while installing nvidia drivers.
Not necessary. Using sudo for that works as well.
I know. I just never use sudo.
Maybe the system sees the Intel iGPU as the primary GPU and isn’t allowing the Nvidia GPU to work properly?
My bet is on the missing nvidia_uvm kernel module. still waiting for the journal output…
That should not happen.
Nvidia-smi is tied to having 1) the nvidia card (he has an RTX 3050), 2) the nvidia drivers installed and loaded (the image in post 8 above shows he has the 580.126.18 driver version installed), 3) the package xorg-x11-drv-nvidia-cuda installed (which provides the nvidia-smi command) (he has that)
The system should not interfere with the command (regardless of what other GPUs may be installed) as long as the 3 conditions above are met.
The only part that is not recently confirmed is what nvidia modules are actually loaded.
@tiramisuphrenia
Please reboot, then show us the output of lsmod | grep nvidia , modinfo -l nvidia, and modinfo -F version nvidia
Thank you for noting that. I had missed it in my earlier reading of his screenshot post for the lsmod command, and asked for a new post of that command.
tiramisuphrenia@tiramisuphrenia:~$ lsmod | grep nvidia
nvidia_drm 159744 1
nvidia_modeset 2265088 1 nvidia_drm
nvidia 15896576 4 nvidia_modeset
drm_ttm_helper 20480 2 nvidia_drm,xe
video 81920 3 xe,i915,nvidia_modeset
tiramisuphrenia@tiramisuphrenia:~$ modinfo -l nvidia
Dual MIT/GPL
tiramisuphrenia@tiramisuphrenia:~$ modinfo -F version nvidia
580.126.18
tiramisuphrenia@tiramisuphrenia:~$
That all looks good except the already noted missing nvidia-uvm module in the lsmod listing
$ lsmod | grep nvidia
nvidia_uvm 4210688 0
nvidia_drm 159744 474
nvidia_modeset 2265088 13 nvidia_drm
nvidia 15896576 330 nvidia_uvm,nvidia_modeset
drm_ttm_helper 20480 2 nvidia_drm
video 81920 1 nvidia_modeset
My next suggestion is the nuclear option.
sudo dnf remove \*nvidia\* --exclude nvidia-gpu-firmware
followed by
sudo dnf install akmod-nvidia xorg-x11-drv-nvidia-cuda
and after waiting 2 or 3 minutes following the completion of the install then reboot.
For some reason your system is not showing the nvidia-uvm module loaded while apparently both @anotheruser (Mark) and I have it loaded and running with no problems using nvidia-smi
Could this be related to the fact that I have a laptop? Hybrid graphics? I have secure boot enabled and the drive is encrypted.
Hurray. It worked! Nvidia-smi displays information about my video card. I wanted to show you the result. I wrote to nvidia-smi again, but the second time it showed this:
tiramisuphrenia@tiramisuphrenia:~$ nvidia-smi

By the way, as far as I know, Fedora 44 is coming out on April 14th. I’m planning to install Fedora 44. Will these commands work on it?
It will be a bit later than 14th April.
Fedora 44 will bring the Nvidia 595 drivers. Installing those might fix this issue, but we can’t say that for sure since we don’t seem to know what caused your system to get into this state.
Had the same issue yesterday, I’m running Fedora 44 (KDE) on a 5070ti. Tried to install akmods and enroll the mok key but ended up with a new 6.19.12 kernel entry in the grub. This one booted fine but I was unable to build the nvidia kernel due to lack of kernel-* packages for that kernel version, and the original kernel (6.19.10) was totally corrupted. Lost the firmware (wifi, sound and bluetooth were unusable) and even lost the noveau driver. So, ended up removing the 6.19.12 kernel, did a distro-sync and reinstalled the kernel modules for the 6.19.10 and the nvidia driver (595).
Also, never could load the nvidia module with secure boot, even enrolling again the mok. I had to disable it. But, anyways, It’s running fine now ![]()
That driver has not been released for f43 (and AFAIK will not be).
For f43 the last supported driver at present is 580.126.18.
The OP has the problem related while running f43.
In other words, your comment is not really relevant to the OP other than to anecdotally relate your personal experience in already running f44.
F44 is currently in freeze pending final release and updates at this point in time are questionable as the developers resolve the final blocker bugs that are delaying release.
I thought I’d deal with Nvidia later. I’ll wait until Fedora 44 is released. Please explain to me step by step how to install Nvidia on my laptop
